PARIS: A top French lawmaker says Gen. David Petraeus has praised Pakistan’s “good cooperation” in the fight against insurgents and said that allied training of Afghan forces is advancing quickly.

The top US and Nato commander in Afghanistan is in Paris for meetings with officials.

Axel Poniatowski, who heads the National Assembly’s foreign affairs commission, says Petraeus briefed lawmakers about how the allies have trained 260,000 Afghan troops.

The lawmaker says Petraeus told the panel that Pakistan has committed necessary forces and obtained “satisfactory results” notably in the South Waziristan and Punjab regions.

Petraeus did not speak to reporters Monday. He is to speak in public at a Paris university Tuesday. – AP

But the whole world thinks that the Pakistani state supports terrorists, including our allies?

Yes, but they also realize the role of Pakistan. 99% of the propaganda is done by India and India is not the whole world. We need to portray a positive image of Pakistan and this forum is just one place we can start.

Yaar I was being sarcastic. Many bharatis say this crap every now and then about whole world believing that ISI supports terrorism along with a bunch of their other overestimated and blown out of proportion crap.

It is easy to earn bad repute but really tough to win appreciation.

If Pakistan wants to be in the good books, it needs to continue its efforts against the negative elements. The whole world knows that you guys are one of the worst sufferers of terrorism and with the continuing efforts it will change the outlook of other countries towards Pakistan as well.

More than just the govt, the people need to stand up against extremism and thats when the country as a whole will be able to stomp out the criticism.

Patraeus has 'LOST' the war in Afghanistan, and are cornered by recent overtures. They think some-how Pakistan can pull out a magic. Frankly, offering peanuts and with-hold of CSF money is still a card US readily plays. All knows that Afghanistan should be fixed and dealt by them and Pakistan is responsibility of Pak Armed Forces.

Many bharatis say this crap every now.

Buddy, believe one 'Indian' mentioned 'Bharatis' is an offensive and racists term. Please respect other race and identity. Thanks

Yes, I find it offensive. Thank You.

If the US is losing the war in Afghanistan I dont think PA can win it UNLESS atleast either of the two conditions are fulfilled...

Option 1 - Break the insurgency by persuading them to put their arms down politically or through money or some other way -If PA can do so, then it does mean the insurgency is a proxy of PA itself.

Option 2 - Use overwhelming force and extrajudicial methods to quell the insurgents..somewhat akin to Iraq. This might not be palatable for PA for both political and military reasons.

So obviously, only option 1 is possible...so basically Petraues is requesting PA to stop its war against US.

Your option 1 as well as option 2 are being done to disadvantage to Pakistan Army and sacrifices to Pakistan as whole.

Pakistan Army is now deployed in Swat, Buner, Dir, Balochistan, all FATA agencies of Khyber, Orakzai, SW, NW, Khurram, Bajaur, Bannu etc etc. There are tremendous sacrifices from Pakistan in order to safeguard and ensure some victory for US objectives.

Unfortunately, the game is other-way round than what Patreaus actually tries to sell to people. The war in Afghanistan has been lost and now Patreaus is thinking by bringing war into Pakistan, the insurgency in Afghanistan can be quelled.

US and its allies must show progress in Afghanistan and that outcome will shape Pakistan's opinion.

Frankly, the truth is Afghanistan is a continuous base for destabilising Pakistan and Pakistan would really be stupid if it is not doing something about that export.

well in an other thread about Dr AQK, after reading posts of some delusional know it all type elderly poster i was having the impression that America is gona attack Pakistan soon :undecided:

Here, It seems like they are appreciating us.

The bolded parts..
Give us Option 3, which does not include your persumed hypothesis.

If the US is not losing the war but is 'contriving' to not win it ie as its objectives are NOT to win against the proxy for both US Army and PA in that case a compromise with Taliban will be made after right noises by June 2011 to allow Obama to show some troops returning from the region at the same time PA gets its foothold, while Karzai will get some role in the new dispensation.
