The difference is that Pakistan decided to turn itself into the "Castle Of Islam" and forgot to become an economic powerhouse like Korea. At least Islam is safe, I suppose, so that Pakistanis can enjoy the comforts brought about by economic development in heaven as the just reward.

Getting rid of the dictatorship and allowing labor to organize did more: far from making S.K. un-competitive it enriched workers enough to increase domestic consumption of Korea's industrial products.

Z.A.B. was a smart cookie: he knew a great deal about economics and didn't care for he saw Pakistan as a vehicle for his own ends. He needed to centralize power for that and cutting off the East, nationalizing industry, and taming the armed forces were all part of it.
