The death of Libya's former leader Muammar Gaddafi "creates suspicions" of war crimes, says the chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court.

Luis Moreno-Ocampo said the ICC was raising the concern with Libya's National Transitional Council (NTC).

Col Gaddafi was killed on 20 October after being caught by rebels in his home town of Sirte.

NTC officials initially said he died in crossfire, but promised to investigate following Western pressure.

"I think the way in which Mr Gaddafi was killed creates suspicions of... war crimes," Mr Moreno-Ocampo told reporters.

"I think that's a very important issue. We are raising this concern to the national authorities and they are preparing a plan to have a comprehensive strategy to investigate all these crimes."

Rebel fighters found Col Gaddafi hiding in a concrete drainage pipe after a long and bloody siege of the former leader's home city of Sirte.

He had gone into hiding in August, six months after the Libyan uprising began and five months after Nato intervened in the conflict.

Amateur videos taken at the time of his capture showed him injured but alive, surrounded by a frenzied crowd of jubilant rebel fighters.

He is hustled through the crowd and beaten to the ground on several occasions, before he disappears in the crush and the crackle of gunfire is heard.

His son Mutassim, captured alive with him, also died in the custody of rebel fighters.

The National Transitional Council initially said that Col Gaddafi had been killed in crossfire, but under pressure from Western allies it later promised to investigate how he and his son were killed.

The ICC has indicted another of Col Gaddafi's sons, Saif al-Islam, for alleged war crimes and he is in the custody of the Libyan authorities.

Mr Moreno-Ocampo has accepted that Saif al-Islam will be tried in Libya, not The Hague.

After intense investigation regarding his method of execution they come to the conclusion his death was possibly a war crime? What a load of old tosh - what kind of people investigate such things? Its clear to us all how and why he was executed. This investigation findings and the method he was butchered is an outrage. If he was guilty of the crimes committed he should have been brought to trial unless of course it was better to silence him to avoid the embarrassment of the west in particular the UK

Attack on Libya was a war crime by itself. Alleged crimes Gaddafi did were faked, he havent done genocide, didnt distribute viagra to soldiers, who didnt mass raped, etc. Vast majority of Libyans supported Gaddafi, and when he proposed to the West referendum with UN supervision, West declined, because they knew too well how many Libyans support him.

"Rebels" were Al Qaeda, NATO and Arab states sent fighters and military forces, and just a few local tribes opposing government, out of 2100+ tribes.

Furthermore, "rebels" actually did genocide (confirmed by NATO, but it was ignored by UN), they also did ethnic cleansing of black people (mass beatings or even executions), yet no "civilized" country condemned that.

When Gaddafi was apprehended, he was alive, just injured in the leg. NATO soldiers were present at the scene. "Rebels" after insulting and toying with Gaddafi drove him to the hospital, and soon it was announced he was executed.

Why Gaddafi was executed? "Rebels" and NATO discussed and decided he was better off dead, reasons are numerous:

1. Since alleged crimes Gaddafi did were faked, any neutral trial would have cleared him of charges, or at most would have given few years of prison for some misconduct. In that case attention would be brought to those who organized attack on Libya, and West didnt want that.

2. Imagine situation if Gaddafi and/or his sons walks free and participated in free elections, and wins them decisively. Military campaign and desire to share among themselves Libyas resources would go down the drain, and remain property of Libyan people.

3. Gaddafi associated a lot with West countries, and even funded some recent elections, and he could tell a lot whats happening behind scenes, West didnt want that either.

4. They also fought if Gaddafi dies, resistance dies with him, yet fights continue till this day against intruders and their puppets, and no mass killings suppressed them.

Harry - its almost unbelievable - The British are so desperate to turn the page over because they will look so dumb if the truth comes out.
Up to a 22 months ago Gordon Brown was meeting and shaking the guys hand. Up to 8 months ago they were sending prisoners over to Libya to be interrogated by them - if Libya was such a bad regime why did they do that. Then Mousa Kousa defected to the UK ( foreign intelligence chief ) he was immediately sent - and is still in a 5 star hotel at the expense of the British government out of the way. They lie through their back teeth!!
Lets see the path Libya takes now in the next 12 months.

saudis and other arabs supported west invasion
Yes, and not just with funding, but with military forces as well. Its remarkable how long relatively weak military of Libya could resist, and it shows once again Gaddafi had support of majority of Libyans.

Bottom line, NATO and UN are just the tools for few powerful countries to extend their influence by all means necessary. Gaddafi even shut down his nuclear program and havent invested much into weapons, he thought peaceful country would be left alone (or he was promised that)... his dead bones, country bombed to the stone age, as well as 65+k thousands dead Libyans speaks volumes how much you can "trust" the West and some Arab countries.

Exactly. When allocated 6 months period was ending, and it wasnt clear if NATO will get an extension, while Gaddafi government was still alive and would had won if outside forces would have left. What did intruders do? In the last couple of weeks UK (along with France foreign legion, Qatari and Saudi military, etc) send their ground and special forces to finish off Gaddafi. Nobody in UN cared of yet another gross violation of UN resolutions and international law, "winners cant be judged", right? :tsk:

I dont know if you are aware but what was even more embarrassing was the fact the British sent their elite forces SAS to assist the rebels in their activities and guess what? -They got caught and William Hague had to beg for their release. 100% agree Gaddafi would have won and still in power. The mistake he made was he should have had elections - he would have won!
