IAF lost 40 planes, 45 lives lost in 3 years: Antony
New Delhi, Feb 23, (PTI):

The Indian Air Force (IAF) lost 40 aircraft in different accidents in which 45 people were killed in the last 3 years, the Rajya Sabha was informed today.

"During the last three years (February 1, 2008 to February 17, 2011), 16 pilots, 24 service personnel and five civilians have died in 40 air crashes reported in Indian Air Force (IAF) in the last three years," Defence Minister A K Antony said while replying to a written question.

The Defence Minister said every accident was thoroughly investigated by a Court of Inquiry (CoI) to ascertain the cause of the accident and remedial measures are taken accordingly to check their recurrence.

"IAF has taken various measures relating to strengthening the aviation safety organisation, streamlining of accident reporting procedure to identify vulnerable areas and institute remedial measures to reduce aircraft accidents," he added.

On the collision of the Navy's frigate INS Vindhyagiri off Mumbai harbour, he said "a Board of Inquiry has been ordered by the Indian Navy. The reason for the collision and details of damage sustained and losses suffered will be established on completion of the Board of Inquiry", Antony said.

On the recent crash involving an Indian army helicopter near Nasik on February 2, the Defence Minister said "the loss to private property and to the government will be ascertained in the CoI."

Yeah we need to get rid of the migs and the cheetahs/chetaks. It is pathetic how we have an attrition rate of 13-14 planes per year.I mean even the US doesn't have such a rate and they have 4 times as many planes as us!

It's not just the likes of Migs, the IAF has lost almost 40 twin engine Jaguar aircraft in it's inventory without once firing in anger.

Mig 21 27 jaguar should be retired or we will lose our pilots which is such a shame finish of with that ever going mmrca start inducting tejas

To get a better sense of the attrition rate of the IAF , this thread needs attrition data from a comparable air force. I think PAF data can be a good comparison. The USAF is far too advanced for us to use it as a metric. The biggest difference between the USAF and our South Asian Air forces is the value that is placed upon the life of the pilot.

Since you ( WJ) often say you know someone in the PAF, how about posting comparable data for PAF too? Try to give links too. Avoid paintings and cartoons.

Thanks in advance.

Mig 27 will be operational till 2018-2020. My friends in IAF have told me. i think Mig-21 bisons will also be operational till the same period.

@john : i totally agree with it wd be nice to compare IAF and PAF accidents ratio vis-a-vis flying hours. although, i have gut feeling PAF will outscore IAF on that front.

i think, its time for IAF to carry out a complete review of training and maintenance schedules. it also needs to have a look at its manpower resources as several of my friends have argued abt shortages of manpower in certain key trades.

Just yesterday Antony stated in the parliament that all Migs (excluding Mig-29) will retire from IAF by 2016. As of now IAF has only one squadron of Mig-21 according to IAF Chief.

No one can compare PAF airforce with IAF as i heard from my source IAF pilots are flying 250- 350hours /year in peace time . And we don't know about PAF so stop b.s comparison chart ..

yes i discussed this with my friends in HAL and IAF and they all said the same thing i.e. 2018-2020. we cannot suddenly phase out all Mig-21s and Mig-27 with out proper replacements. LCA is running behind schedule. do u mean to say IAF has capacity to replace all 120 odd Mig 21 by LCA by 2016. no sir i dont think so. thats why this figure of 2018-2020.

first of all it is not B.S., accidents rates are generally compared on flying hours basis to give a rough idea abt that. world over, same format is used by ICAO and all air forces. so pls do not write off this thing as B.S.

if we can compare total flying hours done by PAF in a single year and then look at their accidents we get the ratio which we can roughly compare with ratio obtained for IAF.

oh!!mate 1st of all ,do you have any idea about PAF average flying hours /year !! Am sure its way way low to IAF ,why ? Why because of geographical POV and country size...

Accident happen because, the old Aircrafts cannot take more than 2 Sorties a Day... And The IAF flying hours per pilot is way more than that... The Maintenance Crew are doing there best to make it capable of more than 4 Sorties a Day,. But these are machines afterall, How can One guarantee its Performance?
