Dassault and Thales confirms the modernization of Indian Mirage 2000

29/07/2011 at 12:18 The two companies today announced the signing of the contract for the retrofit of the 51 Indian hunters.

In a terse press release issued this morning, Dassault Aviation and Thales announce the signing of the contract for the modernization of 51 Mirage fighters 2000H/TH Indian Air Force (IAF), thus confirming the green light is given by New Delhi is ten days (cf. A & C No. 2275). The total contract value is estimated at about € 1.7 billion excluding armaments. ($2.4 billion US dollars)

Short on details, the two French companies simply specify that the contract covers "the integration of equipment and systems of last generation that will allow the optimization of technical and operational capabilities of the Mirage 2000." In fact, it's a real facelift which will benefit the Indians single-engine, which will be brought to a standard similar to that of the Mirage 2000-9 and UAE Mirage 2000-5 Greek. The first four hunters should be processed in France, while the rest will be retrofitted in India. No timetable has been announced, but all indications are that this project could be extended until 2016-2017.

At the heart of the new navigation and attack radar is the RDY-3, the ultimate evolution of the family RDY which a reduced-size version has been built on the Moroccan Mirage F1 modernized. This radar will provide the fire control air-air missiles to be selected to equip the aircraft - probably the MBDA Mica, as amended from infrared-guided and electromagnetic. It will also be associated with a helmet sight Dash, of Israeli origin.

Self-protection devices will also be renovated, with the integration of the latest version of ICMS (Integrated Counter Measures Continued) Thales, which will include equipping aircraft new capabilities for detecting and warning of electromagnetic interference .

In the longer term, the renovation of air-ground capabilities of the fleet is also envisaged. Originally delivered as air defense aircraft, the Mirage 2000H/TH in India have benefited local improvements have enabled them to implement the laser guided weapons, and that using the Israeli LITENING pod. A small part of the fleet would also have been elevated to a strategic vector, with the capability of delivering nuclear gravity bombs.

The adoption of the RDY-3, with its advanced air-ground modes (mapping, terrain following, synthetic imaging ...) will strengthen these capacities. Moreover, a tender should be launched for the purchase of new guided weapons for that platform. For now, Sagem / MBDA would include in the running for the supply of AASM, facing an Israeli offer to base the guidance kit Spice.

So not up to 4 billions, but $2.4, not up to 10 years, but 4 to 5 (the first should be send to France by next year)!

Mirage combat jet upgrade contract signed for $2.4 bn
July 29, 2011 4:34:08 PM

IANS | New Delhi

India Friday signed a $2.4 billion contract with two French defence firms for upgrading its 51 Mirage combat jets that were acquired in the 1980s.

"Thales and Dassault Aviation today signed a contract for the upgrade of the Indian Air Force's Mirage-2000 fleet," a press release from the two French companies said Friday.

A spokesperson for the two companies here said it was a "commercial contract" between the firms and the Indian government.

The Indian defence ministry also confirmed the deal, which the cabinet committee on security had approved a fortnight ago.

"Based on the integration of latest generation equipment and systems, the upgrade will further enhance the technical-operational capabilities of the Indian Air Force's Mirage 2000. The aircraft represents a long tradition of cooperation with French military aviation, initiated 50 years ago," the release from two firms said.

The contract comes even as India's defence ministry and the Indian Air Force top brass remained split over the high cost of upgrading the Mirage-2000 aircraft and the likely benefits to the country's future air power needs.

Taking into account $1 billion for new weapons and another $500 million for new facilities at Bangalore-based Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the upgrade, the cost could rise to close to $4 billion, according to government sources.

Thus, the cost of the upgrade may work out to $79 million per aircraft, which, the opponents of the deal contend, is the same as that of the 126 fighters that India is buying under the $10.4 billion medium multi-role combat aircraft (MMRCA) tender.

Those supporting the deal argue that once upgraded, the aircraft will be as potent as a new combat plane.

Among the upgrades planned for Mirage-2000 are a night vision goggle-compatible glass cockpit, advanced navigational systems, advanced Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) system, advanced multi-mode multi-layered radar, fully integrated electronic warfare suite and advanced beyond visual range (BVR) capability.

The new weapons include 450 MICA interception and aerial combat missiles.

Thales and another French firm, MBDA, will be the weapons systems integrator and missiles supplier respectively.

Two of the planes will be upgraded in France by manufacturer Dassault Aviation, two in India with French help and the remaining 48 entirely by HAL. The upgrade of the entire fleet will take nine years.

The IAF inducted the Mirage-2000 between 1982 and 1986.

4 Bil including wepons & infrastructure.
I personally feal we could have got brand new Rafels instade of upgrading the old ones.
Dont know what our babus were thinking?
Even i think so but i have few questions regarding this like.......

a} Does the price of aircrafts in MMRCA deal includes the cost of weopons also...

b}In future can we use this infrastructure developed for miraage upgrade to assemble LCA tejas mk2 also....

If the answer of {a} is No and {b} is Yes then i don't find any thing wrong in this upgrade deal....

This might be good indication of the fact that MRCA might be going to EF Typhoon... Just a personal guess

No, Indian media speculated about $3 billions + just for the upgrade and those $500 millions for infrastructure that has no base at all. I said it on IDF as well, if HAL needs to build up new facilities for that costs, just to upgrade less than 50 Mirage, they need at least the same for the 60 Mig 29s as well, which is a more comprehensive upgrade (more airframe changes), but did we saw a single report on such new facilities for the Migs?
However, I wouldn't mind new Rafales, but I guess IAF don't want to reduce operational capabilities while the new fighter would be inducted.

although i oppose the upgrade from france because of high cost we need it :) Mirage 2000 is our primary strike fighter without it we have a big gap in our fighter fleet besides it has good air frame life in it to waste it would be a heart breaker

i just the Mirage 2000-5MK2 will be better suited for air interdiction capability for the IAF!

TOO LATE.. :hitwall:
TOO SLOW.. :hitwall:
TOO EXPENSIVE... :hitwall:

IMHO Better use can be made of $2.4 Billion or $4 Billion - Whatever the price tag is.. There seems to be a flurry of stupid decisions being made by MOD/Armed Forces. Every deal seems to be more expensive than what it should be. I am pissed.:hitwall:

MMRCA cost dose not include the wepons packeg. but it includes infrastructure development, training & spares. also may include the MLU, but i doubt.
if Rafale is selected the comanality between the Mirage & Rafale in wepons may give some advantage.

When we say use Su35 some people say it is new plane but in this case how can commonality come when S35 is different from Su30mki and same way as Mig35 to Mig29

So, its finally done... Just wait for RAFALE, we will pay at least 20 Bill. ...
