NEW DELHI: In a bid to promote indigenous aerospace sector in the country, the Indian Air Force has proposed to get transport aircraft produced by private industry for replacing its fleet of 56 Avro aircraft.

"We have proposed to the Defence Ministry that we buy certain amount (of aircraft) from the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) directly and the rest can be produced here in terms of license production," IAF Chief Air Chief Marshal N A K Browne told reporters here.

The IAF Chief was addressing a gathering on the launch of brochure for the forthcoming 6th seminar on 'Energising Aerospace in India'.

The IAF fleet of Avro aircraft was inducted from the 1960s and are used for transporting men and material. The aircraft can carry loads of upto 7-8 tonnes.

Pointing out that the Defence Ministry has a "very positive take" on the proposal, the IAF chief said, "Once the private industry has the technology and know-how of the whole system, then it (aircraft) will not be confined to the IAF only and it can be given to the private sector also."

Browne expressed hope that the proposal would be cleared by the Minsitry and said it "will help the aerospace industry evolve in the country in a big way."

He said the hands of Defence Public Sector Undertakings were full at the moment with several projects in their kitty.

"We have told the Defence Ministry how to go about it... Otherwise it will go to the Defence PSUs who already have their hands full, " he said.

This could take a while- asking a company to design, test and produce a replacement is a big ask but even more so when they are so inexperienced in this field as Indian companies are.

The outlook is still outwards....Why not design a transport plane and then use them while there is time in hand. Why wait for the transport aircrafts to reach the the limit of operational age,and then hastily go on searching for a supplier.
If the indigenous industry can design light-transport aircrafts like Saras, and fighter jets like LCA,then with a little effort, will and fund, they can design some light transport aircrafts as well. Why there is a need to buy license from foreign manufacturers and then make copies at home?

Thats a great idea because after this project indian aerospace companies might be able to design a civil version also so as to support the growth in aviation.

But i have one question, which aircraft IAF is thinking to replace Avro aircraft with ? There were reports of interest in C27j but i don't know what happened. I mean if they selecct C27j then TATA already has tie-up with Alenia Aeronautica for C-27J Transport, ATR Anti Submarine Aircraft.

we need to go to our private industry more why not have some MMRCA fighters produced by the pvt industry?
developing a fighter jet is more difficult than building a transport aircraft not to mention MOD is very carefully moving towards opening defence sector to pvt. companies because of concerns of transferring of tech to enemy nation.

Transport aircraft will be good as it will also help the civil aviation sector also...

what transport aircraft will pvt industry produce? the MTA's or Saras or a foreign one?
MTA is JV between HAL and UAC. Saras is NAL's and most likely to be produced by HAL not to mention Saras and Avro don't fall in the same category, saras is smaller. Yes Air chief is talking about some new aircraft which will be purchased from a foreign vendor and licensed produced by a private company.
I think C27j might be this aircraft as IAF had plans to buy 20-30 of these aircrafts and thats Tata and Alenia Aeronautica also signed a deal.

Mahindra Aerospace is not involved? but whatever TATA advanced systems can produce the C27j and i just read about that thing it looks pretty cool and can serve well for our AF

I don't get why there was talk about the purchase of C27j when C295 is way too cheaper than C27j. Why the hell we never conducted any trials ? I hope we go for C295 because we cannot go for the most expensive aircraft whenever a deal is signed. We are not that rich.

The cost difference between 2 aircraft is between 15-20 million$ per aircraft.

^^^^ the C27J has higher payload and MTOW and is more capable

Yes C27j has higher payload and MTOW but its not more capable. Both of them have the same capabilities. C295 cost around 25 million $ while C27j cost around 55 million $. For special operations we have the best aircraft in the world like C130j and C17. We don't need more such aircrafts. IAFs requirement is for alot of aircrafts. Currently IAF needs around 120 MRTA to replace An-32 which will happen slowly but we also need 50-60 aircraft for replacing Avro which is our immediate concerns.

What i am trying to say is our requirement is for a lot of aircrafts and we cannot go on purchasing the most expensive simply because we can't afford it. What we can do is we can go for second best aircraft which will be cheaper and we don't have to go for poor quality USSR era aircraft.

Sam goes for IA aviation wing which needs around 1000 medium lift choppers and 300-500 LUH and a couple hundred attack choppers but since we cannot afford them we are slowly and slowly moving towards the goal and we are purchasing the cheapest thing that can fulfill our requirements.

There will a huge requirement for the replacement of AN-32s in the next 10 years..MTA is way too heavy ..
Something like C-27 will be better suited...
