IAF Jaguars Face Re-Engine Limbo As Single Vendor Situation Looms

Photo5-779362.JPG

Reports emerged that Rolls Royce planned not to participate in the Indian Air Force Jaguar re-engining competition. The sense you get from the reports is that Rolls Royce has problems with the fact that this is an engine replacement programme rather than an engine upgrade, which if true, would be problematic. Why? Well, as far as the current competition is concerned, the Jaguar engine competition was never to be an upgrade. It was always to be be an engine replacement or "re-engining" effort. Rolls Royce has in fact always pitched its Adour Mk821 as a replacement to the existing Adour engines on the Jaguar, and not as an upgrade. Either way, the situation leaves Honeywell the sole competitor in the 200-engine competition. Does this mean the process gets aborted? Or can the IAF push through a single-vendor purchase?

Bleh. Retire these birds already. Is there any need for a dedicated ground attack aircraft in 21st century warfare?

What's the engine spec of the old jags? Can Kaveri be fitted as the spare heart in the jags in the near future?

There is massive difference in length and diameter between the 2 engines.. No its not at all possible with the current frame and the current engine specifics.

Unfortunately they are among only 2 dedicated fighter bombers we have

can't mrca types do the job ?
i mean even if those are not dedicated bombers it's multi role and latest gen..so the technology gap advantage should give them similar kind of ground attack capabilities.

They can, especially, the US fighters and Rafale and that would be the better solution for sure, instead of wasting money on such old designs. The higher thrust possibly helps to handle the weapon loads better, but we have to keep in mind that Jags has nearly no A2A capabilitiy, so maneuverability is not a point for them. I wonder what the reason for RR was to drop out of the competition, they normally must have a good chance.

As per reports, the tender specified a new engine; while RR offered an upgrade to the older engine. Honeywell is offering a new engine, one which reportedly has been tested on a Jaguar airframe. Wonder how MoD and IAF handle this situation.

But that would be a reason for IAF to drop them, by not fulfilling the requirements and not for RR to drop on their own account right?
