The Republic of Ireland has voted overwhelmingly to legalise same-sex marriage in a historic referendum.

More than 62% voted in favour of amending the country's constitution to allow gay and lesbian couples to marry.

It is the first country in the world to legalise same-sex marriage through a popular vote.

Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny said it was a "small country with a big message for equality" around the world.

The referendum was held 22 years after homosexual acts were decriminalised in the Republic of Ireland.

Atmosphere
Same-sex marriage is now legal in 20 countries worldwide.

BBC Ireland correspondent Chris Buckler said the atmosphere at Dublin Castle, where thousands of people gathered to watch the results being announced, was more like a festival than a referendum result.

Counting began at 09:00 BST on Saturday, and the final result was declared shortly before 19:00 BST.

Their country, their rules.

Also, didn't the Indian Supreme Court recently declare that it was illegal to be gay in India?

Again, your country, your rules. :pdf:
its slightly more complicated... there was a british era law which criminalized same sex relation, a high court struck it down, saying its wrong. The supreme court reversed the high court judgement saying courts dont make law, they interpret it, parliament should make law.
So yes, its technically illegal to be gay in India, but you can be in gay pride parades.

Great eastern civilizations had a very liberal view of sexuality.. They were very progressive, Those archaic laws are of colonial Victorian era that were thrust down upon subjects to control them, Unfortunately while the same West have progressed, their former colonies still hang on to those same outdated laws.. Ironic

Many of our laws remain in original form (English law), when in UK they have been modernised with new laws. Not sure we are just lazy or dont want to change.
Anyway, a curious case of democracy in India, govts are shying away from making any controversial law or passing any uncomfortable executive order. They simply wait for courts to direct, so that they can blame courts.
For example they wont remove unauthorized colonies unless court orders, even though they know they should do it. Once court gives order, they will silently carry out.
This created a strange situation in which courts start encroaching on legislature and executive. Lot of politicians while benefitting from not having to take tough decisions, also started to have a grudge on judiciary, because they judges were encroaching on their turf. Judges were starting to look like undemocratic authority.

In that light, supreme court (probably judiciously) decided to restore some balance.
The legalization of same sex relation proved controversial (with all religious leader challenging it), so I doubt govt will repeal it anytime soon. Its not highest priority.

Exactly, the regressive laws on sexuality are mostly Victorian era British laws. Many parts in South Asia actually had a very open view on sexuality in ancient times.
