How do we tell a difference between an IL-76 and IL-78?

If you are asking about the IAF IL-78 MKI's then, they can be distinguished by the Israeli refueling pods on their wings and the pods on the last quarter of the fuselage.

IL-78 was started in 1982 as the tanker version of the high performance IL-76.In addition to the increased fuel load of the late model Il-76, the Il-78 has two removable 18,230-liter fuel tanks installed in the freight hold, giving transferable loads of 85,720 kg (189,000 lb) (with hold tanks) or 57,720 kg (127,300 lb) (without). IL-78 MKI is customised version for Indian Air Force.

if we remove the refueling tanks
then how do we tell the difference?

These Russian planes all look the same to me.... They make a modification and rename it
Even NATO gets confused and does not give new names to the different versions .... they prefer like Flanker E, Foxtrot D, Flogger B

damn you guys can know very easy from refueling pods and back control station

these both are not in il-76
