Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), one of the leading Indian manufacturers of aircraft manufacturing, has embarked upon a slew of new initiatives to take on current challenges in the rapidly proliferating aerospace sector.

HAL is planning to set up a green field facility for manufacturing light utility helicopter (LUH) and naval multi-role helicopter (NMRH) in Timkur district, Karnataka. HAL and National Aeronautical Laboratory (NAL) will jointly take up design, development and manufacture of 70 to100-seater regional civil aircraft through a special purpose vehicle (SPV), said Dr T Suvarna Raju, CMD, HAL, on the side-lines of Aero India 2015.

Towards narrowing the gap in skill requirements in the sector, now a meagre two percent when compared to Germany (75 percent), Korea (96), Japan (80) and UK (68), HAL has tied up with Bangalore Chambers of Industry & Commerce (BCIC) and Society of Indian Aerospace Technologies & Industries (SIATI) for skill development in aerospace sector. This aerospace skill council will firm up the skill requirements in long term of this highly technology intensive sector.

A Design & Development Management Board (DDMB) under the chairmanship of HAL with members from DRDO Labs, Department of Defence Production and Services for synergising the R&D efforts in country is also among the new initiatives.

New manuals for purchase, system audit, accounts, outsourcing policy, indigenisation policy, R&D policy, Employee Handbook have been released to align business processes towards better operational efficiencies, he also said.

“The year 2015 is going to be a very special year for Hindustan Aeronautics as we will be celebrating 75 years of our existence and we are proud that we have been contributing to the nation’s defence needs and ‘Make in India’ concept over several decades,” said Dr Suvarna Raju.

It may be recalled that defence minister Manohar Parrikar on January 17, handed over the first series production (SP-1) Light Combat Aircraft (LCA), Tejas to the Indian Air Force.

Hindustan Aeronautics has successfully absorbed the technology for manufacturing Su-30 MKI, a 4.5 generation fighter and is manufacturing the aircraft from raw material stage onwards. Till date 150 Su-30 MKIs have been delivered to IAF since 2005.

In addition, the first overhauled Su-30 MKI aircraft was also handed over to IAF on January 9, from HAL’s newly established overhaul facility at Nashik.

With the establishment of this facility, HAL has developed capacities and capabilities to support Su-30 fleet for next 30 to 40 years, he asserted. This will have significant export prospects since nearly ten countries operate the Su-30 fleet.

HAL’s foray into the realm of space includes significant contributions to the successful Mars Orbiter Mission and GSLV Mk-III launch. HAL’s Integrated Cryogenic Engine Manufacturing (ICEM) facility at Bangalore will manufacture, integrate and test the cryogenic engine CE20 and semi-cryogenic engine SE2000 for launch of GSLV MKII and GSLV MKIII launch vehicles

HAL ready to make more doors for Airbus

Bengaluru, Feb 20:

State-run Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) is looking for more orders from aerospace major Airbus to make passenger doors for its civil aircraft which are operated by global airlines worldwide.

“We are ready to take up more orders to produce special doors for single-aisle aircraft of Airbus, as we have already delivered over 2,500 ship sets during the last 25 years,” HAL chairman T. Suvarna Raju said here Friday.

Though the defence behemoth primarily manufactures various types of military aircraft and helicopters for the Indian armed forces, especially Indian Air Force (IAF), it has been producing some equipment for civil aviation firms in domestic and overseas markets.

“We began supplying 600 ship sets of doors to Airbus since 1990 under an agreement as one of its major suppliers,” Raju said at the Aero India 2015 trade expo, being held at the Yelahanka base of the IAF in the city’s outskirts.

Airbus fits HAL’s doors on every alternate single-aisle aircraft and one of its doors is in operation every five seconds globally.

Components of the door include machined beams and cross-members that are joined to build the box-type structure.

The company’s aircraft division has a direct link with Airbus to access data for customising the doors, which are delivered to the latter’s final assembly line at Saint-Nazaire in France.

Airbus India chief executive Srinivasan Dwarakanath presented Raju with a certificate of appreciation of partnership between the two firms on the occasion. IANS

My question is wtf were they doing for decades? Sleeping?
The PSUs in India have a tunnel vision. They are not in a position to meet the challenges posed by market forces or to work up to the satisfaction of the user.Their biggest liability is trade union organizations to put spoke in the wheel. They want work to be given to them to earn their living. Hence, they must not be associated with this competitive business at all. Therefore, for such an industry to succeed in India, a different approach has to be adopted. A Consortium , where all willing private business houses should get together to finance the project, duly supported, guided and encouraged by the government. Foreigners allowed participation only if they are willing to raise their factories in India and accepting payment through Indian currency.PSU did serve a purpose during the days of Nehruvian socialism. Now they are a breeding ground for corruption by the political parties and their appointees, Nepotism is rife in these organisations. The pvt sector will have to perform or perish.

Quite frankly yes... Our Gandhis kept looting . Now those days are gone . Before PSU blames slow process of govt for their failure . But now they can't do it . This govt will give right and left and throw the project heads out of PSU . And we are bringing in more private players into the system which was dominated by PSU with no competition .

We have voted for change . And it's happening . Hope it will continue for the next 10 years atleast. Decades lost . This decade will be the catch up season . Next decade will be the decade of supremacy ... :D

I know bro....Modi has to be in power for at least 15-20 yr to seriously push India ahead like never before. I hope Indian voters realize that.

For decades they have been doing things that the private sector cannot even comprehend of... When Indian private sector was printing morris minor cars, HAL was designing as developing everything from SLV components to Fighter Jets to setting up complex assemblies with ungodly number of components which most in India couldn't even comprehend.

Some people love to bash Defence PSU's no matter how crucial their contribution to the Indian Aerospace and Defence Sector maybe! Our achievements in this sector are collective efforts by all of these PSU. We may only hear of ISRO when it launches satellites into space or when it's key research projects make a mark all around the world but then it wouldn't have been possible at all when all of them wouldn't have contributed their bit!
