Senior Hezbollah Official Warns about S. Arabia's Arms Purchase from US

TEHRAN (FNA)- A senior member of the Lebanese Hezbollah group warned about the Saudi purchase of a large cache of weapons from Washington, and called it a threat to Iran.

Member of Central Council of Lebanese Hezbollah Sheikh Muhammad Yezbek said that the sale agreement amount is around 90 billion dollars, which is one of the biggest in the US arm trade history, and it was signed under condition that the weapons won't be used against the Zionist regime.

The United States has long been Saudi Arabia's leading arms supplier. From 1950 through 2006, Saudi Arabia bought or was granted from the United States weapons, military equipment and services worth $79.8 billion. Almost a fifth of all American arms sales during that period went to Saudi Arabia-or 19% of all US arms sales during the period.

The Congressional Research Service report said that Saudi Arabia emerged as the leading importer of US military equipment in 2009. In a report, CRS said Riyadh replaced Israel as the leading US defense client and received $1.7 billion in weaponry in 2009.

The report, titled "US Arms Sales: Agreements with and Deliveries to Major Clients, 2002-2009," said Saudi Arabia was followed by Egypt and Israel, which both received $1.2 billion in US weapons in 2009. Iraq received $700 million in US defense exports in 2009.

The Obama administration is seeking a go-ahead from Congress to sell up to $60 billion worth of sophisticated warplanes to Saudi Arabia and could add another $30 billion worth of naval arms in a deal designed to counter the rise of Iran as a regional power.

The deal would apparently represent the largest single U.S. arms sale ever approved. It would allow Saudi Arabia, the most militarily advanced of the Arab Gulf states and one of the richest countries in the world, to buy top-line U.S.-made helicopters and fighter jets with ranges that would span the Middle East and beyond.

Unlike some previous sales to Saudi Arabia, this one is not expected to be derailed by opposition in Congress or from U.S. backers of Israel, who have worried in the past about blunting Israel’s military edge over its Arab neighbors.

That’s more than half of the regular DoD procurement budget in 2010 and a number equal to the entire defense budget of the UK for this year (adjusted roughly to USD).

Iran is now seen by Israel, the Gulf Arab states and the West as a significant and unpredictable threat that has changed the old calculus of the region’s balance of power.

The U.S. is realigning its defense policies in the Gulf as Iran improves the range and accuracy of missiles and other weapons that could threaten Israel or U.S. allies in Europe. Besides the Saudi deal, the U.S. has pending or proposed arms sales to Kuwait, Oman, and the United Arab Emirates, and has repositioned some U.S. forces and military assets around the Gulf.

And the Pentagon is hinting the reason is to build a bulwark against Iran? Come on. If Iran strikes Saudi in any kind of conflict, it isn’t going to be by flying ragged out F-14s or second hand MiG-29s on a cross-country Kamikaze mission. It’s going to be from a suicide vest in a royal palace or a car bomb of Prince Bandar’s motorcade.

They’re going to need MRAPs not Apaches.

One wonders why the Saudis need the high-end, major-theater-war gear. Is it prestige? A bulwark against Israel? Something fun for the princes and their buddies to fly to Dubai in?

Or maybe it’s a nice pick-me-up for a defense industry that’s about to take a hit to the gut from a departing Gates.

All these weapons sales are pending as of now and has not been confirmed . If the US veto the Palastenian state by September I don't think this deal will go through.
I think it is a sort of way to bribe the US not to veto. But if it did You will see a very different situation regarding Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia can purchase Arms and other defence products from any country, to safeguard there national security & national interests.

The issue is a terrorist group like Hezbollah can issue statements regarding this.

Well everyone keeps telling us that we shouldn't buy from USA because then we would be stronger than Iran when we should support its Ideology of Gulf dominance. Well over my dead body you will. And look at these statements it is clear provocation at saudi arabia and they want us not to react. Guess what Iran keep firing your missiles into the sea that is the only place where it can go anyway.
