Hellstorm: The Holocaust of Germany, 1944-1947

We've all heard of the disaster that befell the Titanic in the below freezing waters of the Atlantic ocean in April of 1912, but most people are not aware of a more recent and far greater tragedy; the sinking of the Wilhelm Gustloff, a German civilian ocean liner designed with the capacity of carrying 1,880 passengers and crew, but cramped with close to ten thousand refugees fleeing the Soviet onslaught in East Prussia and the Baltic countries after the latter were cut off by Soviet armies from the rest of Germany. On January 30th, 1945, while on its way to the port of Kiel and overcrowded with thousands of refugees, the Wilhelm Gustloff would be deliberately torpedoed by Soviet submarines, taking down with it thousands of wounded, sick, elderly, women, children, and infants. Of the 10,000 refugees, only 1,230 survive the nightmare encounter while the rest perish with the ship, either entrapped within the massive hulk itself, going down with it, or freezing to death on the surface of the water. This was perhaps the greatest nautical disaster in history, yet very few people are aware of this tragic incident.

Similarly, the deliberate Allied Fire Bombing of Dresden, a city of no military and strategic significance at all, a declared Open City completely undefended, cramped with hundreds of thousands of German refugees fleeing allied terror bombings in other cities as well as the mass rape, torture, and slaughter being perpetrated by the advancing Red Army in the east, was another man made tragedy of epic proportions. On the night of February 1945, thousands of tons of incendiaries and explosives were deliberately dropped on the city by waves of RAF bombers, baking women, children, disabled, sick, wounded, and elderly alive. Those who survived the initial shock of bombing would have the misfortune of being sucked into the resulting tornado of fire or become swallowed by molten asphalt. The casualties of this deliberate mass terror bombing of civilians soared well into the hundreds of thousands, despite the official efforts to hide the actual death toll. To this day remains of the victims of this deliberate Allied mass slaughter are known to be buried beneath the city of Dresden. But like the sinking of the Wilhelm Gustloff, this tragic event too was hushed from being mentioned after the war.

The firebombing of Dresden and the sinking of the Wilhelm Gustloff have no parallel in human history, yet they are just two of the many accounts of atrocities afflicted upon the defeated German nation during the final years of World War II as well as the years following the end of the war. From the mass rape of more than two million German women of all ages to the brutal torture and enslavement of German POW's and civilians alike by their allied overlords after the war, the accounts and eye witness testimonies of the few survivors of this nightmare inflicted upon the German nation are truly heart wrenching and would bring to tears even the most hardened of souls.

No documentary today has done a greater job in bringing to light the suffering of the German nation than Hellstorm, based on the bestselling book by Author and Historian Thomas Goodrich. And we'll Germany at least was part of the war . Now think how the countries which were neutral and were thousands of km way from the battlefield but get attacked by the warring countries and lost millions of people in the process do feel .

Everyone know about Nazi concentration camps like Aushwiz but no one bothers to look upon millions of Germans and other europeans including russians worked to death and murdered mercellesly in Soviet Gulag caps of stalin. Nobody talks about Total distruction of Berlin and Mass rape of literally every german women alive in Berlin.
Did germans raped women like that? in Kiev in Stalingrad in Smolynsk in Paris ?
Genocide in Poland done by stalin now its open to world. And who was blamed for polish genocide? Germans.

The iron guard and its leaders were all imprisoned by Antonescu. They played no major role on the side of the axis during the duration of the war.

Also, by the time Dresden was terror bombed the Allied leaders well understood that Germany was defeated. They were aware that Dresden was a declared open city of no strategic significance yet they gave the order to bomb the city, crammed with hundreds of thousands of civilians, into a massive flaming furnace, burning alive hundreds of thousands of people who did not expect this level of barbarity and savagery from the so called "civilized West", making them no different to the Soviet hordes raping, butchering, and pillaging on their way to Berlin.

They were very active in Romania itself though and were part of the government for a brief period during the early stages of the war.

But their role was very limited in gov't and they ended up being imprisoned & disowned by the Romanian government due to their violent actions. Thus they did not play a significant role in the rest of the war.

In the final weeks of the war, what remained of the Iron Guards movement were released by the Germans in an attempt to form a Pro German Romanian faction after Romanias defection but by that time it was too little too late for the Iron Guards to play any significant role in the war.

Joke aside,it was either changing sides or get burned to ashes,when national interest is at stake,allies be damned.Germans also failed to deliver all the weapons they've promised for the war effort and more than that they even refused to give us licences to manufacture those weapons.

Yes,they were,but unlike you we don't mount a high horse of morality.So accept that you were savage killers like the rest of us,no better,no worse.Good didn't win in WW2,evil didn't loose,just the other side won and the other lost.Let's stop sugar coating history,there are no heroes,there was just war and savagery.

Dresden was a shameless show of power and had no military objective or value. The war was already lost by Germany by mid 1944. It was a matter of time before allies reached Berlin. In fact by the end of Kursk it was evident that Germany will lose the war. The germans failed to check the Russians and were on a constant retreat.

Dresden was a war crime, plain and simple. But the standards of morality are set by winners not the losers in war.
