Mohammad Shahid Islam

Detained Bangladeshi independent lawmaker Mohammad Shahid Islam in Kuwait was being interrogated at the Criminal Investigation Department there for the second day on Monday after his employees filed at least 15 complaints with the department.

The expatriate businessman-turned-politician was accused of realising extra fees from 15 of his former and current employees to renew their residence passes, a senior official of Shahid’s Marafie Kuwaitia Company in Kuwait and a close aid of the lawmaker in Dhaka told New Age on Monday.

They said that the employees filed the complaints with the CID before Eid-ul-Fitr and the department picked up the company’s chief executive officer and managing director Shahid Islam form his Mushrif residential area house in Kuwait on Saturday night.

They said that the CID crosschecked the statements of seven plaintiffs on Sunday and it was scheduled to examine the statements of the rest eight on Monday.

A Marafie Kuwaitia Company official said that the next steps would be clear after the CID produced him to the court concerned.

He said that that they were aware of the complaints after the CID detained Shahid Islam.

On Sunday, foreign minister AK Abdul Momen told New Age that the Bangladesh ambassador in Kuwait informed him that the lawmaker was picked up in a case filed over his business matters in Kuwait.

The foreign minister said that the independent lawmaker from Lakshmipur-2 constituency was picked up from his Kuwait home.

On February 26, the Anti-Corruption Commission in Bangladesh initiated an inquiry against lawmaker and NRB Commercial Bank director Shahid Islam on charge of his alleged involvement in the accumulation of illegal wealth through money laundering.

The inquiry against the Kuwait-based businessman was initiated after a 174-page complaint was filed with the commission, said ACC director for public relations Pranab Kumar Bhattacharjee.

Arab Times in Kuwait reported on February 13 that a Bangladesh parliamentarian ‘is believed to be involved in visa trade in Kuwait’ and he was one of the members of the three-man gang sought by the security authorities in Kuwait.

@DalalErMaNodi look, the b lives in mishref, a politician living in mishref is definitely no saint. I only know of one other Bengali with such clout and he’s a chartered accountant in a bank

I agree, I personally know a family from West Bengal, who happen to live in mishref and the father who is a businessman has a net worth of over 100 million dinars.

So yeah to live in mishref as a brown expatriate, you have to be filthy rich.

And note this moron (MP) came to Kuwait, back in 2010, no way in hell can you make that much money in 10 years without being a crook.

People like that usually spend all their money inside Kuwait and thereby contributing and injecting funds into the economy.

In any normal country, they would be given what called citizenship for investment or atleast permanent residence.

By the way, have you been reading the news, all this talk of demographic imbalance amid a pandemic. Gotta give it to the Kuwaiti for picking the best time to open this can of worms.

They're proposing 70% Kuwaitis and 30% expatriates, this is excluding domestic workers.

His assets are distributed more into Canada/Bangladesh. Lives alone, family in Canada... imo not my preferred style of lifestyle.

anyways, I’ve heard of it too tbh, there’s no way they’ll be able to achieve even 5ercent of that estimate... do you think they’ll work to pack groceries of expats? Or clean the streets? How about replacing the educated expat workforce? Well the bank is 90% expats and mostly expats are still working in important departments amid curfew... they have next to nothing of everything, doctors... engineers... scientists... most Kuwaitis who’re educated major in business & finance industry so it might be easier to cover that... healthcare and engineering will still need expats.
They’re also considering passing bills to allow expats of certain professions to stay and work post 60 yo...
So doctors and engineers.
I’m just hoping to secure a job and hopefully start a Private hospital in Kuwait....

Nah dude, you're better of shifting elsewhere after your studies are completed.

I doubt the situation in Kuwait, will go back to the way it was when we were kids, too much xenophobia everywhere now.

Bangladesh isn't half bad, if you have money that is. Life in Chittagong is very pleasant and uneventful, I should be in Bangladesh right now but I'm stranded due to pandemic.

Well technically, I should've been in Germany 4 months ago, but Corona changed my priorities 3 days before my flight.

I hope it was worth it, eating that weird crap and plunging the world into this crisis, they better not eat weird stuff after this.

I’ve option to move to Germany but with a doctors salary there I can’t expect to live a life of luxury, even becoming a senior... I would be spending all my life paying up the mortgage... plus the cut throat tactics in western lifestyle that puts men at a disadvantage is not something that syncs in with the life I want. I don’t want to be giving up everything I worked on because of a divorce... Kuwait situation has been more or less stable for us.... it’s the lower pay/profession people who will suffer and that exist in all countries. Let’s see what happens... I will not refuse to live in Bangladesh either granted my family acquires a good suburban style residence and car in bd... we still haven’t permanently settled in bd...
but if I do move to bd I want to join politics and take nasim’s chair at the cabinet :D

That’s the plan till MOM’S HEART STARTS ACTING UP

Well, if that's the case, then you can a woman in a similar situation and get married to her.

Have her mind her own business and all that, married only on paper for pleasing thy mother.

Or are you staring down the barrel of a traditional arranged marriage, if so then please accept my sincerest condolences.

Well a marriage isn’t official unless it’s consummated so such arrangement would become void sooner or later, plus don’t be wanting people gossiping that I’m impotent or something. XD

in my family arrange marriage doesn’t mean forced marriage... but still arranged or love... both are shit. Love is worse because it’s just a illusion
