PESHAWAR: A US drone strike killed at least seven militants in South Waziristan on Thursday, including an important commander of the feared Haqqani network, security officials said.

The attack happened early Thursday in Nargas village of Birmil area, some 30 kilometres west of Wana, the main town of South Waziristan tribal region near the Afghan border.

Officials and a militant source said four foreigners and an important commander from the ruthless Haqqani network, which is blamed for numerous bloody attacks in Afghanistan, were among those killed.

“At least seven militants were killed in the drone strike,” an intelligence official based in Wana told AFP, adding that the dead included four foreigners and a top Haqqani commander.

“Abdullah Haqqani (the commander) was responsible for sending suicide bombers to Afghanistan,” the official said.

Another official in the neighbouring garrison town of Bannu confirmed the death toll and killing of the commander.

A source in a militant group said that a vehicle loaded with arms and ammunition was also destroyed in the attack.

South Waziristan is one of the seven lawless tribal districts of Pakistan that border Afghanistan.

These semi-autonomous areas have for years been a hideout for militants of all stripes — including Al-Qaeda and the homegrown Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) as well as foreign fighters such as Uzbeks and Uighurs.

Washington pressed Islamabad for years to wipe out the sanctuaries in the North Waziristan tribal area, which militants have used to launch attacks on NATO forces in Afghanistan.

The military launched a major offensive in North Waziristan in June and say they have killed more than 1,100 militants so far, with 100 soldiers losing their lives in the operation.

The army assault was launched after a dramatic attack by militants on Karachi airport, which killed dozens of people and marked the end of faltering peace talks between the government and the Pakistani Taliban.

Pakistan routinely protests against US drone strikes, which have been targeting militants in the tribal areas since 2004, saying they violate its sovereignty and are counterproductive in the fight against terror.
But most analysts believe the resumption of the drone programme after it was suspended at the start of the year — reportedly to give Pakistan space for negotiations with the Taliban — is evidence of collusion between the two countries.

The Islamabad government and military officials strongly deny this.

US is killing " good talibans", Pakistan Army kills " bad taliban". In Both cases Pakistan suffers

Do you know who does the lasing for 'targets'? - You Bhartis have a fixation with the idea of ISI somehow 'controlling' the Taliban. Killing these people is an indication that Pakistan doesn't support them, evidently the Americans too have toned down their rhetoric. Pakistan's approach is pragmatic, we work with those who want to work with us, we integrate those who want to be integrated and we kill those who have no other cure.

But Haqqanis have never been involved in any terrorist activity in Pakistan... Why are we targetting them or even helping Americans target them.. When they have done nothing against Pakistan? Why should we makeenemies for Americas sake? US is leaving... US hasnt helped Pakistan with Mullah fazlullah.. Hes stil safe in Afgh planning terrorism against Pakistan... so.... Why are we making more enemies for US sake? afgh is not cooperating with Pak at all.. just yesterday Gen Asim bajwa reinforced this again...tht how afgh is not cooperating..........we could make peace with haqqanis... Bco post US withdrawal n Afgh...Haqqanis can be a big stakeholder... And here ... we are targetting them or helping US target them...when they have done nothing against us...why?

There is going to be a complete mop up of these groups from Pakistan. They are Afghans and since now foreign forces are out, they need to fix up their issues themselves. Our best hope would be to disarm them and turn Haqqanis and Hizb-e-Islami into a peaceful political front. Since Afghanistan is no longer communist but a an Islamic Republic (which was one of our objectives) there is no bar on them forming a political front to take part in Afghan politics to work for their ambitions while living in the Afghan framework. If they want to continue their warfare, they need to take it away from our soil. Then it would be them vs Afghan govt and no longer our worry.

Good news for Afghanistan and but bad news for Taliban supporters and handlers.
they can cry their heart out. Haqqanis, their nephews and cousins were told to bugger off since the launch of latest army operation in NW. now the cleaners have arrived and there is no time to hide or run.

let the bigoted politicians cry over it and stage prayers.. thats Pakistani democracy for you
PA on the other hand requests even more of these strikes

Removal of Haqqani network will certainly dent Taliban's ability to mount attacks inside Afghanistan.

i love how the media calls it Haqqani "network"

i've always found that funny

i only wish it would be good news for afghanistan (or a few of its "satellite supporters") when TTP commanders are killed either by drone strikes or by PA/PAF :)

the country is still so factionalized regardless of whether NATO is there or not.......it's an Afghan internal issue they'll have to SOMEHOW learn to sort out on their own, so that we aren't forced to

and for those who CAN be cured -- there are de-radicalization centers. The Pak Army has done a TREMENDOUS job on this front (an ongoing initiative since Rah -e-Rast campaign to liberate Swat from the proxy enemies)
