President Hamid Karzai Wednesday outlined his conditions for long-term US military bases in Afghanistan at a key four-day gathering of elders, saying that Kabul wants national sovereignty "today".

"We want our national sovereignty and we want it today," he told the gathering preparing to debate Afghanistan's long-term ties with the US when the bulk of foreign combat troops leave in 2014.

"We want our relationship with America to be one of two independent countries," he told the loya jirga, a traditional gathering of influential Afghans in a consultation process whose outcome will be non-binding.

Karzai said the US must stop night raids and building parallel institutions in Afghanistan as a condition of a strategic partnership agreement between the two nations.

But if it meets conditions such as these, Karzai said Afghanistan was prepared to host US troops in the long-term.

"If they want military bases, we will allow them, it is in our benefit, money will come to us, and our forces will be trained," he said.

He also moved to reassure Afghanistan's neighbours about the nature of any strategic partnership deal.

"We reassure all the friendly countries that no country and no neighbouring country will be interfered with from Afghanistan," Karzai said.

"Afghanistan sees its national interest in having good relations with neighbours and want our independence to have good relations with neighbours such as China, Russia and others."

He added: "America may be powerful, America may be richer, America may have more land but we are lions."

They will sign this pact before year 2012, we are also signing strategic pacts with UK, France, Russia and China.

These strategic partnerships will have it's impact on Afghanistan's future. Hypocrite media censored Karzai's praising of Iran.

Hamid Karzai is a puppet, believe him if you want.

Well, even Zardari is a puppet for Pak Army. The real thing is that he'll allow 10-20k US forces to stay post 2014. US will continue with its Special operations and air/drones strikes to help Afghan forces hold ground.

LOL there are no conditions. karzai was installed by the US and he represents US interest in afghanistan. this is some psy-ops they are playing.

Firstly i dont think karzai can spell! Secondly he really is beginning to believe his own rubbish he comes out with. He was put in by the USA and not the people of Afghanistan. They must decide who leads them. Karzai maybe that person - lets see what THEY decide and not the puppet muppet. Right now he has as much respect as a troll on PDF.

Thats Right. Karzai will be packing his bags the same day U.S. leaves the region.

Its so funny that some people think this mayor of Kabul is so powerful in Afghanistan. He relies on U.S. forces to protect him. If U.S. leaves, who will protect him from Taliban

This guy talks alot of sh_t like all the time he is nothing but a US puppet he is a two face pres showing his people that he is in their side and telling them that they are lions lolz first listen to your master and then talk the truth to your people.

It seems the bharatis are in denial.

US wants to run as fast as it can from the Afghanistan. Karzai trying to get them to stay makes really no difference. 2014 shall be when Afghanistan gets liberated from invading terrorist forces.

Interesting that Bharatis are far more optimistic on the chances of US staying in Afghanistan post 2014 than Americans themselves.
