I won't say it's forced, but I have heard that the Japanese imperial family "handlers" are quite "rough" and that it caused depression with the crown princess that almost resulted in a suicide? This was from quite a while back though.

I'm sure there is a lot of pressure on members. There are more so for members of the Imperial Family who are not (born) into the Imperial Bloodline. For example, Imperial Princess Kiko is a direct descendent of His Imperial Majesty -- the Showa Emperor (the late Emperor Hirohito), and thus is priviledged with respect and honor -- providing her Imperial Lineage.
But the difference I notice is that Princess Kiko is actually very vibrant --- she brings much spunk, love, and smile to the Imperial Family. She's so active in public events such as the International Youth Poem Day held in Japan , and she's quite active in bridging the conservative view public has on the Imperial Family.

HIH Princess Kako attended the 35th National Youth Speech Contest took place in Tokyo. Look at that beautiful smile![]()
I must say, this is one of the topics I don't like discussing, I'm a big critic against imperial families, their function in history is over.
I feel Japan should have gone the republic route after WW2, let the royals be pretenders with some estates like the Habsburgs and other pretenders in Europe.
Shocker, I'm actually a very liberal person.
