United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres reaffirmed his support to Prime Minister Imran Khan to help facilitate a peaceful solution over the humanitarian crisis in Indian Occupied Kashmir (IOK).

Imran met the UNSG at the 74th UN General Assembly session in New York on Friday and commanded his ‘clear articulation of the UN position on Kashmir dispute.’

In the meeting with the PM, Antonio Guterres reiterated his deep concern over the human rights violations in IOK and reaffirmed that he would remain engaged on the issue.

According to Radio Pakistan, the premier briefed Guterres on the 55-day long siege of over 8 million Kashmiris amidst communication blackout imposed by the Indian government.

“Such draconian lockdown has no parallel in recent history and the need for its immediate lifting could not be stressed enough,” said PM Imran rejecting India’s illegal and unilateral actions of August 5.

The premier stressed that India’s recent actions represented a new chapter of intensified human rights abuses. He also noted that the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights had comprehensively documented the previous gross human rights violations by India in occupied Kashmir.

Highlighting the threat faced by the region due to India’s illegal and irresponsible actions, the PM underscored the responsibilities that United Nation and the international community has and urged them to take urgent actions to help save lives in IOK.

Practical steps by UN would be welcome in this regard.

The UN should insist it be allowed to send observers immediately and talk to detained persons; the thousands of boys held wherever in India, the Kashmiri Politicians, as well as the medical personnel in both Srinagar and smaller towns and villages.

Pakistan needs to reach out to each and every organization under the UN banner that can mobilize its own resources and keep on the pressure on the Indian siege and occupation of Kashmir. Unicef (Children's rights), UN Women's organization (so they can speak to Kashmiri women directly and hear from the truth from them directly), UNHRC so human rights abuses particularly under this siege. The World tourism organization is a less organization that can reach out to, and state the siege has hurt the livelihoods of the people of Kashmir. The WHO; world health organization should be allowed in to see the state, or lack thereof, of medical care available. The World Bank and the IMF needs to go in, so they know that when in the future India request funds for development, or at least request their support in rubber stamping their policies, that the Indians will be building infrastructure to further subjugate the Kashmiris. The UNDP as well as UN affiliated aid and NGOs on Human Development.

Leave no stone un-turned and keep up the pressure to break the siege and expose what India is doing there.
