Greek PM says Turkish jets forced his helicopter to reduce altitude

MARCH 25, 2019

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras attends a student parade marking Greece's Independence Day, during his visit on the island of Agathonisi, Greece, March 25, 2019.

ATHENS (Reuters) - Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said Turkish jets buzzed his helicopter as he was flying on Monday to a Greek island to mark the anniversary of the 1821 uprising against Ottoman rule, but Turkey said there was no attempt to intercept his flight.

“They forced the helicopter I was on to maneuver low until Greek jets intercepted the forces violating our national air space,” Tsipras said in a speech on the island of Agathonisi, a few miles from Turkey’s Mediterranean coast.

“The message I want to send them is that such foolish actions have no meaning, they spend their gasoline for nothing. We will always be there to defend our national integrity.”

A Greek military official told Reuters that Greek F-16 fighter jets intercepted the Turkish jets about four miles away from Tsipras’s helicopter.

A Turkish security source said the Turkish jets were conducting routine missions. “There has been no interception attempt by Turkish fighter jets during the Greek prime minister’s activity today,” the source said.

Though NATO allies, Turkey and Greece have long been at odds over issues ranging from ethnically split Cyprus to air space and overflight rights. Relations have worsened since Greece blocked the extradition of eight Turkish soldiers accused by Ankara of involvement in 2016’s failed military coup.

Yeah the Russian thing was serious. Although you guys have long history with Greece and we get to talk a lot about the comparison between India and Pakistan. According to her, you guys just do it for some fun and end up going back to the respective territories. Things aren't bad as compared to us lol..My Lucky Turk Bros. At least you've got Greece, not some uncivilized neighbor like India where people are brutally violent who exist in masses.

Wrong comparison my friend. In case of Turkeye and Greece, Turkeye is clearly way superior and a regional power, Greece is not. In Pakistan India case, both are regional powers. Pakistan have full power projection capabilities against India. Recent skirmish which India lost, proved it.

Also, in case of Greece pass its limits, Turkey show them their teeth.
They defense minister came to Turkish island to put flowers(Which Turkey got after landing on it in 1999 with secret operation) and Turkish ship hit the smaller Greek ship with its body and the greek defence ministers flower fall down to water))
on the other hand, just some month ago greek jet fall down after intercepting Turkish jet and Pilot couldnt even go out of canopy and his communication stoped. It was thought Turkey tested EW technology there..

I don't think EW could affect a pilot getting out of his canopy. Ejection systems aren't electronically connected but are connected to the seat of the pilot which activates the rocket motor and shoots the canopy off. Most likely thing is the handle was jammed or the pilot was inexperienced.
