SANGSAD BHABAN, July 7, 2019 (BSS) – Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud
Humayun today told the Jatiya Sangsad that the government would set up an
automatic assembling plant by 2022 to produce cars aiming to meet its local
demand.

“Pragoti Industries Limited (PIL) is the lone state-run car assembling
entity under the Bangladesh Steel and Engineering Corporation (BSEL) of the
Industries Ministry,” he said while replying to a tabled question placed by
ruling party lawmaker Shabnam Jahan (women seat-3).

Humayun said Pragoti Industries Limited will implement a ‘modern automatic
assembling plant setting up project’ in the country by 2021-2022.

Once the project is implemented, cars will be produced locally by the
progressive manufacturing method, which will help meet the local demand of
cars, he said.

Pragoti can lead the charge in giving birth to an indeginious automobile sector. At the moment what they do is still fairly low level assembly which is not very large in number

Pragoti a fuking Bangladesh government owned and operated organization. Don't expect anything other than sucking taxpayers money...

Lets wait and watch...

PHP has already started assembling Proton vehicles in fairly large numbers. So has Rangs for Mitsubishi vehicles. IMHO the private sector needs to be given fillip using tax incentives and dumping tariff support in slow manner by discouraging import of re-conditioned vehicles. This was done in Pakistan sometime ago and they have a thriving local automotive sector which is slowly moving towards import substitution. India's market dynamic/size is too large and doesn't match ours.
