Govt to fix charges of private hospitals

The government is planning to fix the charges of services provided by private hospitals and health clinics like public hospitals.

Health Minister Zahid Malik said it on Monday at a media conference at the Secretariat ahead of the National Health Service Week.

"It's a complex process but once implemented, it'll help ensure that the service seekers aren't cheated," added he, as per a report on UNB.

Malik said the private hospitals have been asked to submit a list of service fees. The government will then grade the quality of services and finalise the chart.

It will not work. Govt. need to create an environment which will foster a climate of competition among them. Rather than fixing fees, they need to fix and vigorously monitor certain minimum criteria to set up and run a private hospital. Now sub standard private clinics and diagnostic centers are mushrooming without any control.

I am not against setting up a fixed price chart, but if implemented it will be detrimental for the services and no one wishes to start a hospital in such environment

Best way is to let free market operate at the price it sets, and govt can subsidise the users of the services (that they deem need assistance) directly.

Pragmatic. Governments already fix the price of medicine. Now fixing the price to access healthcare would increase drive to lower costs in the supply sector and increase the efficiency of services. This would result in a higher quality of service in hospitals. It would also open the tertiary sector (e.g. medical insurance) to new business. This is a positive step towards creating a good health system, increasing confidence and supporting a greater range of services available to clients.

Bangladesh has free heath care service including medicines at Government hospitals and community clinics. But problem is all Government Doctors don’t come to work, do private practice at Private Hospitals.

So when anyone goes to Government Hospitals they are routed to Private Clinics or Hospitals saying Doctor is not here, will take longer time to get appointment etc. Plus the free medicines are sold to the Private pharmacy’s.

Due to free health care and medicine many also come just to collect free medicine and sell it outside. Lastly due to high number of people Doctors at Hospitals don’t see a patient for more than thirty to forty second where they can’t even tell their problem.

So many goes to private hospital to get better treatment but they are overcharged there. Many are asked to do unnecessary tests, do surgery in such a way they need to come again, sent patient intentionally to life support to get extra money, forcing woman to do c-section instead of doing normal delivery. When they do test they do it with expired chemicals, even some case give report in pre signed Doctors pad.

So lots of irregularities are there. All needs to be addressed.

Govt fixes the price of gas, gasoline, diesel, bus fare, electricity among many other prices. They can offer subsidize financing with conditions to provide more reasonable prices. This may force the current operators to compete with cheaper prices.

Generally good intentions have unintended consequences.
