ISLAMABAD - Finance Minister Senator Ishaq Dar has said that the government would go ahead with both Dasu and Diamer Projects at the same time and eventually phase out costly thermal power generation which had resulted in large import bill.

He directed the officials of the Ministry of Water and Power to plan for the international investors meeting to be held in Washington DC to attract donor agencies and US investors for construction of mega dams in Pakistan with special emphasis on opportunities available in Diamer Bhasha Dam Project.

The finance minister said this while chairing a meeting to discuss issues related to financing of Diamer Bhasha Dam at the Finance Ministry on Saturday. He observed that Indus River Cascade had an over ninety thousands mega watts power generation capacity and had there been focus on hydel power generation.

He said that Pakistan would not have shortage of energy or water. He directed Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) chairman to expedite formulation of a comprehensive Hydel Power Policy in order to attract private sector investment in this huge potential. He emphasized that hydel led energy mix could provide cheaper electricity to the people of Pakistan.

He mentioned that with the construction of three gorges dam, China has placed a check on floods and built a reservoir on which the whole China was benefiting. WAPDA Chairman Mr Zafar Mahmood briefed the finance minister on a draft Hydel Power Policy which was being prepared and it would include all issues related to attract private sector investment in hydel power generation in Pakistan.

He said that the policy would provide for upfront tariff to the international investors. He informed that the policy would also address environmental aspects in addition to technical and financial aspects. He informed that the draft policy was essential for attracting private sector investment in hydel power generation.

The WAPDA chairman briefed the finance minister on the work done so far in connection with Diamer Bhasha Dam. The finance minister was informed that during the last twenty four hours, Mangla Dam had absorbed two million acre feet of water from its catchment areas. He said that the Mangla Dam Raising Project had brought immense benefits not only for conservation of water but also to control flooding.

Finance Ministry advisor, finance secretary, Economic Affairs Division secretary, BOI chairman, Dr Waqar Masood, Mr Miftah Ismail, Mr Saleem Sethi, Rana Assad Amin, and senior officials of the Ministries of Finance and Water and Power also attended the meeting.

it's not a news.. it's a repeat of statement already given for 2000 times before..
So basically now we have to wait if it really is implemented and not just recorded for repeating in the future to justify that they had it in mind and were doing something about it...you know talks in progress scenario?

Any government regardless of who is in power is willing to go ahead with these projects. It's just that World Bank did not have faith on PPP and they trusted the current government bit more so they released funds for Dasu. But a part from that the willingness to build both dams was always shown by PPP and PML-N. There is a lot of technicalities involved in Diamer bhasha dam so it being delayed is not a big news but the politicians took a right decision to start a straight forward Dasu dam side-by-side.

Dasu is likely to be completed without any problem for as long as the funds are there and no restrictions are imposed on Pakistan but Diamer on the other had faced opposition from India and we lacked funds to build from our own resources. So it is bit tricky but yes ultimately its going to be completed too (Insha'Allah)

Do they have a choice with current situation of flooding and the amount of criticism could cost them their seats! :pop:

This is not a new project....and it is also not a new thing regarding funds...if they have accumulated a lot of funds i.e. since the start of noora tenure (also funds from PPP tenure which was wasted for god knows what sacrifice) ...I am sure some could have been allocated to this project....

I believe there are plenty of funds if you keep metro projects and repeated tearing of roads in multiple cities at a hold....

Yea tearing like forgetting pipelines AFTER THE ROAD is built and then building it then tearing it coz someone remembered to put the cables underground and so on....this has been happening in multiple cities...if a contract is given to build you should list everything to throw in and if the contractor didnt do it...sue him or charge him for the expenses not give him the 2nd contract to fix the 1st thing he didnt do and then a 3rd one to rebuild again and so on...

The dam problems seem the same....after they announce it suddenly they dont have funds...dont you give a proposal listing the funds and how to get them before you announce the project?

lol our parents and their parents also listening that bs since last many years..... jo jahan ka choor chakari **** bheta hey in the parliament

Exact same 'news' was put out last August without any further progress in an entire year.
The progress is made, from sketch/drawing board, the work has started, from 0 balance, 700 million dollars were given by the world bank to start the progress. From tiny/ignorable allocation in the national budget, at least a respectable budget was allocated for starters

It's still in early stage and next year more funds would be needed followed by more in the following year. But the project (Dasu) has taken a birth and is no longer under pregnancy

why was India opposing Diamer Bhasha dam construction? Is it because it is being built in Gilgit-Baltistan?

I think India should allow this dam because it will mitigate the floods that is happening in your country on a regular basis. Also I have another question. Since Dasu dam is being built downstream from Bhasha dam, what will be the impact on Dasu once Bhasha is built eventually??

Well when the floods came in 2010, the judicial commission report concluded with the advice of building Munda dam on emergency basis. They claimed that if Munda dam had been built, the floods could have been prevented.

I cannot say about the current floods in Pakistan but it definitely is not on that high scale as it was back in 2010 and I hope we don't see such floods again.

Yeah India has reservations since it flows from Gilgit Baltistan.

in Last six years every year i listen this news .. but the progress is nil regarding this

Pakistan needs Munda, KB , BAsha and DASU before 2025 ....

If nothing else then building the small dams in Potohar/Mianwali/Jehlum/Mainwali districts will decrease the impact and/or strength of floods and will also serve the irrigation purpose. The same way we should develop a lake or a storage place in Bahwalpur district may be near Burewala or Bahawalnagar. The water level there is decreasing at an alarming rate and this seems to be a reasonable solution. This water can be a blessing in disguise.. even if it there after every 3 to 5 years. just my 2 cents

Yaar u guys again started this joke of Dams, Plz don't start any new thread of any further news if its appears again..
