http://www.bssnews.net/?p=280071

DHAKA, Sept 30, 2019 (BSS) – Railway Minister M Nurul Islam Sujon today
said the government has taken an initiative to build a separate rail bridge
over the Jamuna River.

He made the remarks while visiting the construction works of the 3rd and
4th line of the Dhaka-Tongi rail line and the Tongi-Joydebpur dual gauge
double rail line.

The projects is being implemented under the finance of the Indian
government, said a press release.

“Initiatives have been taken to build the ‘Bangabandhu Rail Bridge’ over
the Jamuna River… It will make the journey easier for passengers”, Sujon
said.

The minister also said several railway development projects are underway as
the government has taken steps to transform the railway sector into an
advanced one, added the release.

While asked about the new route, the minister told the journalists that,
“The Tongi railway route is very important, but sometimes it gets busier than
usual resulting in schedule upheaval… the new

Tongi-Joydebpur route will work as a solution to the problem”.

Later, he left Joydebpur station in a special ‘Ganker’ to inspect the
actual situation of rail communication on his way to Dhaka, added the
release.

State Minister of Youth and Sports Zahid Ahsan Russell, Additional
Director General (Infrastructure) of Bangladesh Railway Khandakar Shahidul
Islam and Additional Director General (Rolling Stock) Faruk Ahmed, among
others, were present during the visit.

Bangabandhu rail bridge should have been constructed years ago. Existing rail line over the main Bangabandhu Jamuna bridge is single line rail which in insufficient. Anyways, good initiative.

Bangladesh railway is trying to involve the JICA fund to implement this project. But, why the GoB does not try to build it with its own resources, manpower, and technology? A matured country is supposed to have learned from the Koreans when they built the Jamuna bridge and from China when it is building the Padma Bridge.

How many centuries shall it take for BD to use its own resources to build something important in the country? Why depending so much on the foreigners?
