JAMMU: Accusing BJP of making false and fake promise regarding statehood to Jammu, the senior leaders of State Congress on Monday expressed resentment over the undemocratic and unconstitutional manner adopted to disband and bifurcate the oldest State in the country, enjoying special privileges under the Constitution of India and splitting it into two Union Territories, depriving it of its separate identity and powers, making Jammu more vulnerable to outsiders besides making tough competitions in all spheres for younger generations in absence of constitutional safeguards.
In a meeting held here, PCC Chief G A reviewed current political and security situation in Jammu and Kashmir. The meeting observed that abolishing of special status enjoyed by the State under the Constitution of India and further unilateral and arbitrary disbanding and dividing the State into UTs has destroyed identity, status, powers and privileges available to the residents. “It would cause great harm to peaceful Jammu region, with influx of people from various other parts to purchase lands, compete in employment, admissions in various professional and other courses, besides posing a threat to our social and cultural identity, after removal of constitutional safeguards, originally introduced by Maharaja Hari Singh,” Congress leaders added.
The Congress leaders questioned BJP for befooling people and exploiting regional sentiments of Jammu on basis of regional discrimination and advocating a separate State but disbanding J&K into a powerless structure of UT. “The decision has deprived Jammu of its original Dogra identity and privileges, while maintaining the political dependence on Kashmir, as before,” alleged Congress leaders, questioning how the State would get further integrated if entire valley and various parts of Jammu region are under seize and resenting against the decision of Union Government. “Entire pro-India mainstream leadership of Kashmir and other parts of the State including Jammu region are under detention or house-arrest. As vast population of the State is aghast over unilateral and undemocratic decision of the Centre depriving people of their special rights and privileges, without taking mainstream leadership on board,” they added. The party would keep a close watch on overall security and political situation and would regularly review the situation in a broader spectrum by reaching out to people in different parts of the State, asserted Congress leaders, asking the Government to lift all restrictions on pro-India mainstream leadership, as their continued detention would further add to resentment and anger.
Others present in the meeting included Madan Lal Sharma, Tara Chand, Mula Ram, Th. Balwan Singh, Ravinder Sharma, Th Manmohan Singh, Rajnish Sharma, Balbir Singh, Manjit Singh, Shah Mohd Choudhary and K K Pangotra.
