Google’s Head of Large Customer Marketing, South Asia, Lars Anthonisen believes Pakistan is on its way to producing one of the largest digital audiences in the world and is, therefore, a growing market for foreign investors.

He listed five reasons for companies to expand their digital campaigns to Pakistan in a blog post he wrote for Think with Google, a platform that hosts expert analysis for e-commerce and digital branding in the Asia-Pacific region.

Fast-growing population

According to Anthonisen, Pakistan’s fast-growing population means that it has an increasing number of people that go online every day. He also refers to growing urbanisation in the country, where 40 per cent of total households live in cities. The rate of urbanisation in Pakistan is higher than that of India, which means there are more “potential customers”.

SME-driven economy

Anthonisen says that Pakistan’s economy — expected to be the fourth fastest growing economy in the world by the year 2030 — is largely driven by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Around 90 per cent of the businesses in Pakistan are SMEs that have a 40 per cent share in the country’s gross domestic product.

Increasing number of smartphone users

Pakistan has a sizeable online population due to decreasing smartphone prices and cheap data packages. About 59 million people in Pakistan use smartphones, out of which 83 per cent have Android devices. As smartphone prices continue to drop, the number of users is likely to increase. As data prices are “some of the cheapest… in the world”, the usage of mobile apps, like YouTube, is increasing.

Internet penetration at a ‘tipping point’

Even though internet penetration in Pakistan stands at 22 per cent, Anthonisen claims that digital consumption in the country is on the rise. Currently, there are 4.46 million internet users in the country. He cites the increase in YouTube watch time as an example of increasing digital consumption. The video platform has witnessed a 60 per cent increase in its watch time over the past three years.

Chinese investment

According to Anthonisen, the Chinese-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) programme is China’s largest investment in a foreign country. One of the projects of that are part of CPEC is the laying of 820 kilometres of fibre-optic cable, that will connect more Pakistanis to the digital world.

Anthonisen advises businesses to “leave a mark” on Pakistan’s growing online market to grab the “endless opportunities that it can offer to investors”.

I think it would be much better we should develop our own software instead of relying on foreign countries which will benefit more to them than us

Economy cannot grow without foreign investment.

Google eco-system (Android; GMAIL; Google Search Engine; Google Scholar; Google Maps) have no peer in the world. It have made life much easier for all.

Google can play an important role in uplifting Pakistani E-commerce business.

They are highlighting SMEs because it shows the country has an underdeveloped market. There is still room for a large player to enter and take huge market share. Our tech industry is dominated by large foreign players. The cellcos are all foreign owned. The largest ecommerce site daraz is Chinese owned. Locals don't invest in tech so that's why foreigners come to dominate the market place. Then there will be calls for expropriation of foreign businesses by butt hurt people.

Also taxes on telecoms and internet access in Pakistan are among the highest in the world. While other countries seek to bridge the digital divide Pakistan looks to widen it! There's also rampant online censorship because the people are intolerant.

Really... ? Pakistan is one of the highest privaye charity percentage donation countries in the world. Pakistani hospitality is well renowned.

I don't see how thats going to develop our society in any way.
But hey, its something....

You probably don't know any Pakistanis or have been to the country

Pakistan is One of The Most Charitable Nations in the World:...

It also has one of the lowest tax to GDP ratios in the world. All those charitable contributions are on the back of tax evasion.

Also a lot of that money goes to jihadi seminaries that spread terror. We are currently in hot water with the FATF because of this lax attitude to terror financing. The IMF has also indicated that it'll be making complying with FATF conditions one of its conditions for the bailout package.

Not to mention compulsive consumers with a big heart, the Faith on GOD, a good strategic acumen etc.!! And, above all ability to face hardships, up/down-times etc. with courage, optimism etc.!!! Even the 5th gen warfare, imposed by the best in this business, is unable to cow them down; rather, they’re showing stiff defence and occasionally taking the momentum back to the court of the Super Powers, 7x larger arch enemy etc....

Pakistan is a “hard country” - even a Jewish analyst had to admit....
