Give me one good reason why journalists are sometimes referred to as as the fourth pillar of the state
Well, if we take our own example, the only people currently providing the checks and balances are journalists, reporters and anchors. Whether they're going about it in the right way or not for some, they are doing it.
Who else is placing the corrupt and inefficient politicians on the spot, or exposing their looting ways? Given they're meant to be providing 'governance', and can't do that in the slightest, the press / media form an important pillar indeed.
A lot was expected from the judiciary post 2007, and it's not transpired. On the other hand, the media has continued its aggressive spotlight on the ruling elite (despite threats) and if anything, that should be welcomed.
No one is downplaying the significance of the municipal cleaners, their role and contribution is valued and appreciated. However, given our current state and the need to improve governance, and strengthen institutions, the press are one of the best tools in forcing things to change.
Whether that's through raising awareness, mobilising support for an important cause, they need to be free and independent to pursue such activities.
As long as it's responsible and not reckless, we need to be thankful of their efforts - they've come a long way in 10 years.
