Civilians in India-administered Kashmir cleared(link is external) the streets of Srinagar, the capital, in protest of an impromptu visit by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Kashmiri separatist groups urged a full shutdown in the state, and said(link is external) the visit was a political move capitalising on Kashmiris' recent hardships following devastating floods.
The prime minister also visited soldiers stationed at Siachen glacier, a region north of Kashmir claimed by both India and Pakistan, known as the world's highest battlefield. Modi explained(link is external) his arrival: "I have come to spend my first Diwali as prime minister with you. 125 crore [1.25 billion] Indians can celebrate Diwali today and go about their lives in comfort because the jawans [soldiers] guard the borders, prepared to make every sacrifice for the nation."
