New Delhi: India and Germany will hold their first inter-governmental consultations at the cabinet-level when Chancellor Angela Merkel visits New Delhi today on an invitation from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

India is the first Asian country and one of very few nations with which Germany holds a joint cabinet meeting and this is seen as a demonstration of its high esteem for India as a long-standing and reliable partner and as a recognition of the country's rapidly growing economic clout and and technological prowess.

India was one of the first nations to recognise the Federal Republic of Germany, when it was carved out of the three zones occupied by the western allies at the end of World War II and Ms Merkel will be paying tribute to 60 years of "successful" diplomatic relations between the two countries.

She will attend tomorrow evening in New Delhi a concert marking the opening of the "Year of Germany in India", which is dedicated to the anniversary.

The Indo-German inter-governmental consultations in New Delhi will be chaired jointly by Chancellor Merkel and Singh and it will be attended by five German cabinet ministers as well as senior officials from several ministries.

Among them are Minister for Foreign Affairs Guido Westerwelle, Defence Minister Thomas de Maiziere, Interior Minister Hans-Peter Friedrich, Minister for Transport and Construction Peter Ramsauer and Minister for Education and Research Annete Schavan.

Further expanding and intensifying the economic cooperation between the two countries will be high on the agenda of the meeting and the two sides are expected to explore ways to step up bilateral trade as well as to promote German investments in India and vice-versa.

Discussions will also focus on new possibilities for cooperation in building up and modernising India's infrastructure, development of renewable and conventional energy sources and promotion of technical education and vocational training as well as new avenues for cooperation in the field of defence.

Economic Cooperation has been the main pillar of Indo-German relations and its continuing importance is evident from the fact that Ms Merkel is taking with her a high-ranking business delegation of 19 top managers of leading companies representing key industrial sectors such as civil and military aerospace, auto ancillaries, electrical industry, chemicals, machine tools, railway technology and technical services.

Germany is India's largest trading partner in the European Union and bilateral trade has been growing rapidly in recent years.

The exchange of goods and services between the two countries went up by 17.8 per cent in 2010 and reached a record level of 15.44 billion euros.

However, the India's deficit in bilateral trade widened as it imported goods from Germany worth 9.25 billion euros, 14.32 per cent more than in 2009, compared to its exports to Germany worth 6.19 billion euros, 21.49 per cent up from the level of the previous year.

India's main imports from Germany include machinery, engineering goods, aircraft, precision equipment and control systems, metal products, chemicals and synthetic items.

I think we need to closely follow Germany's decsision to halt Nuclear plants in 2022. They might be making a move towards renewable energy which would be very beneficial for Indie, due to our problems and extreme pressures on resources.

I think India should closely look into Germany's decision for loøking at renewable resources and look to adopt those measures but India should not stop nuclear power generation in the near future because the population of India very high ,the per capita consumption of energy is very high and so is the total consumption of energy is huge.In that case nuclear energy is ideal to suffice our energy needs without adversely polluting the environment.India falls in a weak seismic zone so it is ideal to operate nuclear power alongside other renewable energy resources like solar, hydro and wind as india's future energy resources

Absolutely correct. Increase our investments in research and development of renewable energy but continue with new nuclear plants after ensuring fool proof safety. In the long run, only nuclear energy can meet our enormous energy demands and renewable energy resources can supplement and plug short falls if any. Our dependence on Gulf oil and domestic fossil fuels has to cease sometime soon.

I think India should look for Energy sector investment from Germany... They are planning to close Nuke plants, they must have came up with alternative clean energy sources, Its right time, We must pitch in now and try to do some Joint venture for them,

this will give us expertise in clean energy production... \

Along with it, India must gain the Nuke energy expertise from Germany, As they are closing the Nuke energy plants, we may get this technology/expertise in cheap. We can employ there nuke technicians....

By the fact that I'm living in Germany, I might be able to say something on that. German industry is already number 1 when it comes to renewable energy, but without Fukushima they wouldn't stop their nuclear plants so soon, infact the same government cancelled an older agreement with the energy industry that said to stop it by 2020 and even extended the lifes of the older (less safe) power plants. So this now is mainly a political decision, because the pressure from the German public was too big and the ruling parties lost several regional elections this year.

Regarding nuclear energy, I am very happy that Germany is on the right way again and searches for other alternatives, because nuclear power might be important for an industrial country, but it can't be controlled and even a small accidend can cause a way wider range of catastrophes. But there is also something that many people forget, the nuclear waste!

Today, there is not a single country in the world that has a real idea what to do with it, or where it can be stored in a safe way. Even in Germany that are known for high techs and safty regulations, we always see reports about problems in the final disposal sites and when people say that nuclear energy is cheap, they don't add the huge costs that are necessary to refurbish and store the nuclear waste.

In Germany the total ammount of nuclear engergy is not that high (mainly coal, oil, or gas) and that is the reason why they can replace it with renewable, or new and more efficient cole, or gas power plants. For India on the other side as an emerging country, with rapid industrialisation and such a huge population, there is no chance to not go with nuclear power, unless you want to kill the economy. So although I don't like it, India has to go for nuclear energy, but I hope that Japan made our politicians take a closer look on safty and strict regulations. A good thing is that India already has a big focus on renewable energy and (at least as far as I can tell from Germany) we understood it very early, that we have to look on both, economy and ecology.
