GCC Eyeing Egypt in Caliphate Drive

The six-member Gulf Cooperation Council has added Egypt to the list of countries it may induct as it moves towards confederation.

Egypt is on the list of countries that could join the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), a senior Kuwaiti official revealed Monday.

Humood Al Radhwan, head of the GCC directorate in Kuwait's foreign ministry, made the statement as he commented on the progress of the negotiations on Morocco and Jordan joining the alliance.

"We support Jordan and Egypt joining the GCC as full members, but only after two years," Al Radhwan told Kuwaiti daily Al Rai ahead of the GCC summit in Riyadh next week.

"The GCC countries share close geographic, linguistic and religious features. The Gulf society is fully integrated and there is no real distinction between a Kuwaiti and an Emirati, for instance. We do have harmony with Jordan [and Morocco], but we need two years of partnerships before we look into their cases and expand on their membership until we reach full integration.

"I must here point out that Egypt is on the list of joining the GCC, and that it has priority," he said, quoted by the daily on Sunday.

The GCC - UAE, Oman, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia - began actively seeking to expand its membership as the Arab Spring took hold as a means of creating a strategic ballast against Shiite Persian Iran, its primary rival for regional hegemony.

GCC members have also begun laying the groundwork to transform the joint economic forum into a diplomatic and military confederation - which, with Jordan and Egypt inducted into its ranks, would put the newly forged Arab super-state on Israel's western and southern borders.

It remains unclear, however, what impact the inclusion of Jordan or Egypt would have on those nations' respective peace treaties with Israel. The current GCC members have technically been at war with Israel since 1948.

Regional observers note that while Jordan and Morocco are both monarchies - a point of commonality they share with the current GCC members that eased the decision to begin their integration - Egypt is ostensibly a democracy.

Nontheless, adding Egypt - a regional military power and the Arab world's most populous country - would provide the alliance with considerable strategic depth in any future confrontations with Iran or Israel.

According to Al Radhwan, there were slight differences on how to address inducting new members, "just like there were divergent views on whether to present full assistance to Bahrain and Oman or to give it annually."

The official was referring to the GCC pledge in March to set up a fund worth more than $20 billion, as an aid package for Bahrain and Oman to upgrade housing and infrastructure over 10 years and generate jobs.

Al Radhwan said that Kuwait had agreed to financially support Jordan and Morocco, but added that the amount had not been decided.

"We have not decided on how the funds will be provided, either. They can be given directly or through development funds that will undertake huge projects in both countries to help them out of their economic crisis," he said.

In late November, the UAE, Kuwait and Qatar set up a $2.5 billion sovereign investment fund to support Morocco's tourism sector.

Some analysts suggest the Saudi Arabian-led GCC is slowly moving to create a modern Islamic Caliphate.

Ladies and Gentlemen. A new Caliphate is about to be born. The time of weakness is about to disappear inshallah.

this is good news, and the latest call by the King for the Arabian peninsula to unite as one will add more strength to the Muslim cause.

The sooner this happens the better.

Actually after reading this news I realized how all of this makes sense and fits in with everything being done is to advance this cause. A modern Islamic Caliphate. Man King Abdullah is an amazing man indeed.

Excellent. Looks like that 'Clash Of Civilizations' idea is not so absurd after all. Let the new Cold War begin.

This won't be a 1 vs 1 thing. This will be an all out one all over the world.

Main goal is to counter Iran?

No the goal is much grander than that. The goal is to create a new world Super-power. As one official says it was not named the GCC because of the Gulf but it is a ban Islamic union it's name is flexible it was only called "Gulf"CC because of the location of the countries involved but as Morocco Jordan and Egypt and more Islamic countries are in the list it will change its name.

This won't be a 1 vs 1 thing. This will be an all out one all over the world.
Of course it will be. Every alliance have a leader, no matter how nominal, and with it comes risks for said leader. In the previous Cold War, that leader was US. In this next one, it will be US. So who here has the balls to step up against US?

The US either goes into a isolation state to fix its problems causing other powers to rise up or it will fall a very harsh fall and Implode rather than Explode. A lot of countries want to be the dominant Super-Powers so it will go down as play offs for a while until a few remain that will truly heat it up. You certainly didn't think the US reign will last forever did you?? Or this fake peace will last too?? The world will simply go back to its roots that it was in thousands of years ago because this is how nature is.

Wrong. We tried that prior to WW I. Then tried again prior to WW II. Neither worked. Aggressors do not recognize neutrality and it is only a matter of time before said neutrality WILL be violated. Even the supposedly 'neutral' Swiss recognized that in WW II. And please spare US all the metaphysical gobbledygook.

Do you think it is a realistic idea ?

conflict of interests would def. arise in my mind

Do you think it is a realistic idea ?

It is a very realistic ideas and it won't come without problems for sure, but the trick is in overcoming them. I know from the outside for you Saudi Arabia appears to be a despotic evil freedom taken regime but in the inside people think differently. Surely there is room for improvements but we are patient people and realize that change comes in the form of generations not slap to the face kind of change.

not about realism, its destiny and it has to happen.
Exactly in what form and shape will it happen ... we don't know.

Now as for balls for stopping US, no problem.
Afghans have done a good job till date.
I agree with you that it has to happen one day, and in whatever form. As of right now, i don't think it can work because of economic reasons. Alomst 40% of Egyptians are poor. We don't have a bad economy, but we have too many people lol

I don't think badly of Saudi Arabia at all, i think badly of all Muslim countries with the exception of Turkey. We are all equally bad in my mind.

Its not about neutrality Gambit. Its about taking a big gamble in the future. Either the US retreats and save whatever it can so that it may live to fight another day or go all out against odds and risk losing much. However the choice is up to the American Empire now. You see Gambit Romans realized this a long time ago and said "Armies run on Gold not weapons" and when you are out of "Gold" you are out of Army. Sure it is not as bad as people here make it sound but we all know it is heading from bad to worse the speed of which is still fluctuating.

The plan is to inject huge sums of cash into Egyptian economy to make it thrive. You should read how much investments Saudi Arabia and Saudis are making an Egypt now I think ti reached somewhere around 12 Billion now. Saudis are opening a lot of companies in Egypt now to give a push to its economy so we speed up the process of unity.
