Officers who want to advance to Major rank need to have an academic degree.

Also, there are academic officers (Actual rank), these are soldiers who did an academic degree prior to their actual conscription (They come for one day, get processed into the army, sign a delay to their service and go to the university.

Those who, at the end , enlist as academic officer are “rushed” into regular officer course (They still have to past the pre-course tests).

On the one hand, if you’re a good student and want to go to college, and your field of study interests the IDF, then the IDF will be happy to defer most of your service till you’ve graduated. You’ll do only a little service during the academic year and upon graduation you’ll be fast-tracked to an officer’s commission. Then as part of the bargain you’ll serve a couple of extra years.

On the other hand, if you enter the army without a college degree and the army believes you have a brain that it can benefit from cultivating in a particular direction for a particular purpose, the army will educate you by itself and/or sponsor your education in a regular college.
