The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation on Thursday pledged to provide Pakistan with an amount of $200 million for the implementation of ‘Ehsaas Programme’ in the country next year.
Pakistan and the Gates Foundation signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) during a meeting in New York supporting the government’s initiative in alleviating poverty from the country.
According to the agreement, the amount would be spent on 134 poverty alleviation projects under the programme.
Prime Minister Imran Khan, Bill Gates, Chairperson Ehsaas Programme Dr Sania Nishtar and other officials were also present in the meeting.
Speaking on the occasion, Imran said, “Ehsaas Programme is a huge anti-poverty project in the history of Pakistan. It has been planned with a great deal of attention and I am pleased the Gates Foundation will also assist it with a great range of activities now.”

He stressed that poverty alleviation was top priority of his government from day one.
The programme would help to achieve the sustainable development goals set under the United Nations (UN), PM Imran added.
The prime minister and Gates also expressed full commitment to put right measures in place to end polio from Pakistan once and for all.
What is Ehsaas Programme?
The programme was launched by PM Imran in March this year with the objectives to reduce inequality, invest in people, and lift lagging districts.
At the launch of it, the premier had termed the programme a ‘jihad’ to alleviate poverty and bring the destitute people above the line of poverty.
Under the programme, two per cent quota in government jobs had been reserved for those with physical disabilities would be implemented. Furthermore, two per cent quota had also been fixed for those with special needs in the Naya Pakistan Housing Programme.
As part of the initiative for the uplift of marginalised groups and those with physical and intellectual disabilities, directives had been issued for the procurement of support equipment. This included hearing aids, wheelchairs, walking canes, and other tools.
Under this programme, people with special needs will also get health insurance cards.

Ehsaas programme’s first phase to cover 11 districts in Balochistan
QUETTA:
The provincial government on Monday decided to appoint a focal person in order to facilitate implementation on the federal government’s Ehssas programme in Balochistan, with the cabinet vowing complete support for its timely execution in the country’s least developed province.
The cabinet meeting, chaired by Balochistan Chief Minister Balochistan Jam Kamal Khan Aliyani, also lauded the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) led federal government for the nationwide programme that would “be helpful in eradicating poverty from Balochistan”.
Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) on Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection Dr Sania Nishtar had earlier briefed the cabinet regarding the programme, including its technical training component which, she said, would help stimulate economic activity at the lower-tier.
“More than 10 million people in Pakistan will provide social protection through the programme while loans without interests will be provided to the masses so they could start their own business,” she said, adding that in the first phase the programme would be launched in 11 districts of Balochistan.
Hailing the intervention as much-needed and timely, the chief minister assured Dr Nishtar, who is also the chairperson of the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISE), of full support while expressing hope that its benefits would be spread across the province.
The cabinet also approved amendments in Electricity Rules 1937 – which regulates the generation, transmission, supply and use of energy – that has been enforced in Balochistan since 1980.
The amendments would allow the provincial government to collect revenue from the registration of electricity installations, their licensing and examination on an annual basis.
The cabinet members also agreed upon the development of the 200-kilometre Mach-Kharan Highway under the federal Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) and approved construction.
It also reviewed the report submitted by the sub-committee of the health department regarding affairs of the Children Hospital Quetta, after which it was forwarded for further deliberation without a decision.
The chief minister also approved the re-publishing of the booklet of development schemes for the year 2019-20 after removal of mistakes. The meeting also approved funds for the construction of an auditorium and a hostel at the Institute of Medical Sciences Quetta.
Earlier, the BISP chief, who also visited Pishin, urged authorities to create awareness about the benefits of the Ehsaas programme. She also instructed the officials to ensure complete transparency in order to sustain people’s trust and make the project a success.
She also met women beneficiaries at the BISP Pishin office and solicited their feedback.
Dr Nishtar also met Balochistan Governor Justice (retired) Amanullah Yasinzai and briefed him about BISP activities and efforts for poverty alleviation and social protection.

Bill Gates doesn't involve himself with Microsoft anymore.
If we need IT investment, government needs to setup policies, fund local startups and setup IT parks so we can showcase our talent internationally.
Right now, most of our IT talent is drained into freelancer - meaning everyone else getting credit for our work.

Remember my 'Boycott Apple' moniker/image in this forum from few years ago? Because in the epic battle between Microsoft and Apple, I knew that Microsoft and its founder Gates are far better than the 'me, me, me' Apple Inc and its fanbois. Microsoft is as close to an open source company as any for-profit corporation can get and Bill Gates is as close to a modern greatest philanthropist as anyone can globally can get.
When was the last time Apple donated to global causes?! Hiding behind slick commercials, bribing Obama to give Apple a shout-out by bringing only 1% of manufacturing back into America, having fanbois shows as line up to get overpriced toys, arrogant wanna-bees. Bastards!

Ground realities are worse in many countries than Pakistan ... especially in Bd and Gd but they are supported by lobbies and media while country like China that produces very high quality products and some that outshine any competition, still suffers bad repo due to Sinophobia in the west especially USA. All major cities of Pakistan are safe enough especially Lahore, Peshawar, Multan, Faisalabad and Islamabad etc.. Even Karachi is safer than many cities like Sao Paolo etc. It is all about media, biases and lobbies.
