BAPEX, a state-owned company, is going to open Sundalpur Oil and Gas Exploration Well-1 at Shahjadpur village in Companiganj upazila of Noakhali. The State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, Enamul Haq has formally inaugurated the exploration work on December 23.

Petrobangla Chairman Hossain Monsur and Addi-tional Deputy Commiss-ioner of Noakhali (revenue) M Ataur Rahman, SP, Harun ur Rashid Hajry and other high officials of the government attended the programme.

BAPEX would conduct survey across the country as part of government initiative to find out new gas and oil to meet the country’s growing demand for energy. In this respect, the government has allocated Tk. 1,500 crore for conducting a countrywide survey.

BAPEX MD, Mortuza Ahmed said he would confirm the actual figure of gas reserve in the field by February 2011 after getting real data during drilling. Tk 73 crore will be spent for exploring the well in Sundalpur. Explaining the structure found during the survey, he said that the exploration has been started on the assumption that there is a huge gas deposit here.

BAPEX conducted a 2D (two dimensional) survey at Sundalpur in the costal district in 2008, expected that over 500 to 700 bcf (billion cubic feet) gas would be available for extraction from this field, Managing Director of the company Mortuza Ahmed said.

BAPEX authorities are estimating the reserve to contain 500 bcf to 700 bcf of gas. The international price of a 500 bcf (billion cubic feet) of natural gas is $2.5 billion or more.

Approximately a $5 billion fuel is needed to produce a GDP worth $100 billion. By the same estimate, this $2.5 billion gas will help produce a GDP worth $50 billion. So, the reserve is not very small. It is a medium-sized field.
