The French can relax. There will be no shortage of Bouillabaisse or smoked herring in France if Indian space scientists from the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) chip in with their satellite-based information to home in on new schools of fish off the Atlantic coast.
The concept of using technology to enhance the fish catch has caught the fancy of the French Parliamentary Space Committee which visited facilities of the space agency here on Wednesday and Thursday.
“What struck us most about the Indian space programme are benefits from applications meant for the community, particularly that for fishermen. This is of interest to us because we only provide information on weather for fishermen. This will be of benefit for us,” Mr Pierre Lasbordes, Member of Parliament, and chairman of the space committee, told this newspaper.
The six-member group was also impressed by the fact that people in remote areas are provided healthcare through a satellite link. This model of tele-medicine would be tried in France with details scheduled for discussion during the forthcoming meeting between scientists of CNES, the space French agency, and Isro.
“There’s political will for more partnerships and it will reflect at this meeting,” he added.Mr Pierre Lasbordes said the French are keen to sign up with Indian space scientists for studies aimed at early detection of calamities, measuring the temperature of surface of the ocean, and deep-space exploration.

This is for those who start talking about poor when theres a talk about funding ISROs future projects. Every project that ISRO undertakes, directly or indirectly goes to uplift the Indian society, so keep this in mind before ranting about ISROs funding.
