Toulouse has been dubbed the "capital" of Yellow Vest protests this weekend.
Tear gas was used by Toulouse police against what they claim were "individuals dressed in black, masked and armed," who attacked security officers "with flying objects”, reports Radio France International (RFI).
The protests are the first since the controversial anti-rioting law took effect on Thursday which makes it illegal for people to cover their faces during demonstrations.
Dozens of organisations, such as Amnesty International, have slammed the anti-rioting law as undemocratic.
Yellow Vest leaders have hit out against the use of force against demonstrators.
One of the main leaders, Fly Rider-Maxime Nicolle, said: “Did you see: everything was going well and they gassed us.
“I decided to come here because there was a national call, but I am disappointed with the response.”
Less than an hour after the start of the protests, clashes broke out between “black block” demonstrators – those who dress in black and cover their face – and police.

Today’s unrest is to serve as merely a taster of things to come as a huge demonstration is pegged for April 20 as Macron is expected to present his response to a nationwide debate.
On social media, Yellow Vest protesters in Toulouse were called on to keep up the fight against President Emmanuel Macron to “show that everything is just getting started after the results of the big debate”.
Prime Minister Édouard Philippe on Monday presented the initial findings of a three-month-long public consultation known as the Grand Débat (Big Debate).
Macron launched the initiative in January in response to the Yellow Vest protests saying he “intended to transform violence into solutions”.

The French government revealed on Monday that “huge exasperation” over the level of taxation was a prime concern of the grand debate.
But despite the French government suspending tax hikes and announcing increases to the minimum wage, protests have continued.
Anne-Christine Lang, a member of Emmanuel Macron's Republic on the Move party, said: “These are no longer people who are calling for their rights, these are rioters.”
