Forces battle shortage of 'fighting rank' officers

If i recall properly, Pakistan is suffering from such a shortage as well. But the reasons are entirely different. There are too many casulties amongst officers of PA in the current war against TTP. PA officers like to lead from the front, and the numbers prove it.

I saw Manohar Parrikar and many BJP people talk about it on Social media, not sure whether they want to implement it or studying its feasibility and effects.

Putting conscripts into an army will drastically reduce its professionalism, morale and efficiency... and I am talking about putting them into enlisted ranks. Not to mention what would happen if you start putting these people into leadership roles. The effects would be disastrous.

A person who has been forced into military service and who has 6 months of half a**ed training experience is no match to a professional soldier.

In the end the MoD has to make military service more attractive by improving promotion chances, salary, family friendliness etc...

They are considering many options, this is one of them along with mandatory NCC training, lets see what they choose.

Very worrying for the indians, we on the other hand, with a large and complex insurgency and terrorist problem, have no problem recruiting officers, in fact we have the pick of Officer Cadets, all the courses are over subscribed, and the recruitment boards, can be really picky.

Chicha Rafi...Let me help you to understand...At pakistan army is one and only good career option...But if you will talk about our country...here youth are getting n number of great option for his/her career....This is the main reason behind man shortage in force... For god ...Please do not compare India and pakistan.

You're dead wrong son, the PA Officer recruits, are mainly sourced from the middle class in the major cities, or from the rural gentry in the rural areas, the city boys are well educated and could get any number of work both in the country and abroad, they are connected. As for the rural boys and girls, many, not all come from rich land owning families with lots of land and also many options.

Many still sign up for the forces.

Well in India, the issue is on two fronts. First is that Software industry provides a crazy amount of employment opportunities for University graduates. Its a relatively peaceful job and if one sticks for fair bit of time, salaries do grow significantly for one to lead a comfortable life.
On the other hand, jobs like manufacturing, defence etc demand much more from an individual in terms of slogging hard in field, longer working hours and perhaps far less comfortable working life. Also if you compare salaries NOT all can offer what Software industry does.
As a result, not just Defence, but manufacturing sector too is suffering and failing to attract talent. Besides, the government salary scales even though quite improved recently fail to match with White Collared Jobs and when one adds the risks involved, it becomes something, young graduates don't look forward to.
My job involves interacting with a lot of young under-graduate mechanical engineering students (who come for internship) and i can say one thing, these guys know that at the end of their course, they'll get some kind of IT job and hence a major chunk of them don't even know/want to learn basics of Mech engineering like Material Sciences, Mechanics, Thermal engineering etc, something i remember my generation absolutely loving about 12-15 years back.

Promote from the ranks. As the battalions are rotated in counterinsurgency ops promising candidates should be chosen from observation among serving jawans. These can then be sent to the academies for 2-3 year retraining officer course. Thus they will have both field experience and academic training.

Good observation brother but this has some practical difficulties earlier there used to be a provision under which a jawan was granted commision in all the services irrespective of his background like a jawan from airforce could become an officer in the army this was highly criticised by the army top brass who felt that Air Force jawans being more educated were hindering the army jawans so this was discontinued .
But this was just the first step the problem is that 60% of jawans retire as just sepoy talking about making them officers is another issue but now time scale promotions have been implemented to even the ranks let see.
Given the number of qualified jawans being recruited there has not been much development in this field
Hope they find some people having officer like qualities and utilise them

I think the idea of Austerlitz is on the right track. Nowadays even the jawans have a good education and if they prove they have leadership quality they should be sent to the training courses and on completing the course made officers.
If education is a hindrance, allow jawans to go for distance education, I think with the national defense university on the cards, this can become an option. I think the US allows a similar course.
This would improve morale of the jawans and also improve the respect for them in the eyes of the officers.

This is more serious than having issues with equipment..... leadership is so crucial in a battle that it can hardly be underestimated.

The MoD seriously needs to do something to make military service more attractive.

Something to tell yu. I was rejected twice by IA, my friend was rejected four times. Its the psycological test which we are not sure of what to face.. :(

Not this much and this is why another (4th) battalion has been raised at PMA ...

Can you tell us the fields in which you were tested?

Physical and psychological

Only after one pass psycology test they will test yu for physical..

The dreaded 'Battery and Aptitude Test'!!It got me once too. :(

Psycology is the one which makes u to the grade. But there is one flaw in it. If one clears psycology one time and goes until last round, next time same person is rejected in psycology test. I don understand it. However we shouldnt discuss this in enemy forum. I am sure RAW is watching :D

So here to defend mutha india on PDF?

On topic : 4 times? We here can apply only twice for ISSB ..

Actually one can apply N number of times till the age of 27. I saw participants who attended along with me for 14th time.
One guy was getting 50k per month (ok thats what he told me, and I couldnt verify), but still attended for 14th time for family prestige.

The only dream that i ever dreamed about since my childhood day was to be a commissioned officer in the Indian Army.I prepared hard for over a year when i was in class 12 but then i came to know that my corrected vision was a bit more than what they had asked for in the application form and hence even though i was physically quite fit and healthy i couldn't join the Army:tsk::cry:!!But now i am going to correct that mistake by joining the W.B.Police Service:P(i have already cleared the 1st stage of the exam, preparing for the next level)
