KARACHI: Two of the biggest names of the football world, Ricardo Kaka of Brazil and Luis Figo of Portugal, are set to visit Pakistan next month after the government assures issuance of visa to the duo.

An official of the sports management company Touchsky group confirmed to Geo.tv that both the players will be in Pakistan for a promotional activity ahead of their planned football action.

Earlier, the visit looked under a cloud after Pakistan’s information minister Fawad Chaudhry was quoted by a news agency that the country had denied visas to the duo.

“We refused a visa to Kaka and Figo. Can you believe that? I called the section officer and he never heard of Kaka. I spoke to the interior secretary yesterday and gave him a piece of my mind,” Chaudhry was quoted as saying by Reuters.

However, Chaudhry while speaking to Geo.tv clarified that visas were not denied and only passports were returned.

“Actually not denied but just returned. Now will be issued by tomorrow and they are coming to Pakistan in January,” the information minister told this correspondent.

The duo is invited to Pakistan to formally announce a series of friendly games planned in April, and according to Hasan Rao of Touchsky, there are more stars likely to join.

“This event is going to be a big event for Pakistan Football. Figo and Kaka will be here next month to announce more details about the event which will be held in Pakistan in April,” Rao said.

“I am not in position to reveal further details, but I can confirm that Karachi and Lahore are set to host some big football names and it will surely help us portray a very positive message from Pakistan.”

Rao added that the players will be welcomed by Prime Minister Imran Khan in Islamabad.

Football superstars Ricardo Kaka and Luis Figo are set to arrive in Pakistan on Thursday (today) to formally launch World Soccer Stars event. The duo will make special appearances at Karachi’s Pearl Continental Hotel and Lahore’s Packages Mall.

Brazilian icon Kaka and Portuguese legend Figo will promote World Soccer Stars during their visit to Pakistan – an event aimed at uplifting football in the country and offering a gateway to football talent at grass-root level.

World Soccer Stars has promised a football spectacle starting from April 26 to 29 with two matches in Karachi and Lahore.

In a Twitter post earlier, Kaka said he was looking forward to spending a few days in Pakistan. “Hello Pakistan! I’m on my way. Looking forward to spend a few days with you guys,” the 36-year old star tweeted.

Figo shared similar feelings in an earlier message on social media. “It is exciting to see another emerging country in Asia embrace football. I’m certain in a population of 220 million there must be huge potential waiting to emerge into the international scene,” the former Portuguese footballer tweeted.

The event is being organised by TouchSky Group who hopes that the visit of the legendary duo will help portray Pakistan’s softer image to the rest of the world.

Football legends Kaka and Luis Figo arrived in Karachi on Thursday to officially kick off World Soccer Stars 2019 in the country.

Speaking at a ceremony at Karachi's Pearl Continental Hotel, Figo — who came on stage holding a bat — said: "I feel a warm welcome from everybody; there is great passion for football [in Pakistan]."

"We'll come with 10 legends in April to play a match," he added, inviting Pakistan football coach Jose Antonio Nogueira to the stage.

Kaka thanked people for the warm welcome, saying it was his first visit to Pakistan. "I have a great impression of this country and its people."

A number of sportsmen, including Pakistan captain Saddam Hussain and midfielder Saadullah, as well as media personalities attended the event. Hussain brought Pakistan's football jersey for Kaka and Figo. "It will be an honor for me if they accept my gift," he said.

When a reporter pointed out that the captain hadn't been called on to the stage, Hussain joined Figo and Kaka and presented the Pakistan jersey.

Earlier, the event's host Bilal ashraf introduced TouchSky Group's CEO, who said Figo and Kaka have made a commitment to bring authentic international football to Pakistan.

"It won't be easy but we're here to tell you that football can come to Pakistan," said the CEO. "We have begun a journey from 10 different parts of the world."

Welcomed in Karachi
The former Real Madrid superstars arrived in the port city in the afternoon. They tweeted a message for Pakistani fans prior to boarding their Karachi-bound flight.

They had announced their planned visit of Pakistan last week through video snippets.

“It’s excited to see another emerging country in Asia embrace football," Figo had said in a video announcement of his visit to Pakistan. "I’m certain in a population of 220 million there must be huge potential waiting to emerge into the international scene.”

“I am delighted to visit Pakistan and play an instrumental role in promoting and helping football in the country. I have never been to Pakistan so I am really excited to come and play football whilst helping unearth hidden talent,” said Kaka, who retired from professional football in 2017.

The duo are being brought by TouchSky Group, a UK-based player and event management company, which also brought Ronaldinho and several others stars to the country in 2017 in another exhibition event.

Figo is a big figure in world football. He wanted to be head of Fifa a while back. He's clearly an ambition man, someone we should consider working with to get Football a proper foothold in Pakistan.

Nice, Ronaldinho came last year as well. Football will be such a cheaper alternative for our country to focus and excel in. Unlike cricket which requires a ball, wickets, shoes, bat, pads, helmets, ALL you need in football are shoes and a ball. Heck some of the Brazilian football superstars grew up playing without shoes!

why did he came on stage with "bat" is he here for cricket?o_O

Bizarre i know. They came to promote football and were handed a cricket bat.
