English.news.cn | 2015-03-21

SEOUL, March 21 (Xinhua) -- The foreign ministers of South Korea, Japan and China agreed on Saturday to continue to develop trilateral cooperation mechanism as an important framework of cooperation for peace, stability and prosperity in Northeast Asia.

In a joint press release issued after a trilateral meeting, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, his South Korean counterpart Yun Byung-se and Japanese counterpart Fumio Kishida expressed their hope that the meeting will see the beginning of a restoration process of trilateral cooperation mechanism.

Saturday's talks were held almost three years after the last meeting in April 2012. The talks were suspended as China-Japan and South Korea-Japan relations soured due to rows over historical and territorial issues.

In the spirit of facing history squarely and advancing towards the future, the ministers vowed to address related issues properly and improve bilateral ties and trilateral cooperation.

"The three ministers emphasized that respective bilateral ties among the three countries constitute an important foundation for trilateral cooperation, and that the deepening of trilateral cooperation, in turn, contributes to each bilateral relations and to the peace, stability and prosperity of the Northeast Asian region," the statement said.

The ministers also promised to more actively promote over 50 intergovernmental consultative mechanisms and numerous cooperation projects among the three side, and accelerate trilateral free trade agreement (FTA) negotiations.

In terms of East Asia cooperation, the three top diplomats welcomed the expected establishment of the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) Community at the end of this year, and decided to build on the momentum by promoting trilateral cooperation within the existing frameworks of regional cooperation.

During the meeting, the ministers also discussed global issues, including terrorism and extremism, the situation in Ukraine and the international economy, and vowed to continue close coordination on various global challenges.

Chinese FM calls for more efforts to promote China, S. Korea, Japan cooperation
English.news.cn | 2015-03-21
SEOUL, March 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said here on Saturday that more efforts should be made to promote healthy and sustainable development of the trilateral cooperation between China, South Korea and Japan.

"We should reflect on past experiences and overcome problems and difficulties through practical actions," Wang told the seventh foreign ministers' meeting.

China always attaches significant importance to the trilateral cooperation and does not wish to see the cooperation being disturbed and affected, Wang said, adding that the foreign ministers' meeting is a belated but hard-won talks that should be cherished.

Wang also expressed the hope that the meeting would offer an opportunity to properly handle the historical issues by facing up to history and advancing toward future so as to ensure the trilateral cooperation will move forward in a right direction.

China is willing to deepen practical cooperation with South Korea and Japan in various fields and further promote regional economic integration as well as peace, stability and prosperity, he said.

Wang also stressed that the three countries should make common efforts to overcome political obstacles, and boost mutually beneficial cooperation as well as people-to-people and cultural exchanges.

During the meeting, the Chinese foreign minister also introduced China's preparations for the activities marking the 70th anniversary of the victories of anti-Japanese war and the World Anti-Fascist War.

The first ministerial meeting among the three countries was held in June 2007 in South Korea and had been since held annually.

The talks, which were last held in April 2012, were suspended as China-Japan and South Korea-Japan relations soured due to rows over historical and territorial issues.

Chinese FM urges Japan to face history squarely
English.news.cn | 2015-03-21

SEOUL, March 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Saturday urged Japan to face its wartime history squarely and handle the historical issues properly so as to pave the way for the smooth development of bilateral ties.

The historical issues came under the spotlight as this year marked the 70th anniversary of the victory of World Anti-Fascist War and War of Chinese People's Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, Wang said when meeting his Japanese counterpart Fumio Kishida on the sidelines of a trilateral foreign ministers' meeting between China, South Korea and Japan.

Japan's attitude toward the aggression war, which is related to the political basis of China-Japan relations, has a direct impact on Tokyo's ties with its neighbors, Wang said.

"I hope Japan could grasp the opportunity and face up to the history in order to unload the historical burden and advance toward the future with its neighbors," he stressed.

The Chinese top diplomat also noted a four-point consensus, reached between China and Japan at the APEC meeting in Beijing last year, was the first step taken by both sides toward the improvement of their ties.

But the real improvement of China-Japan relations depends on the implementation of the consensus, he said.

In November 2014, China and Japan signed the four-point agreement to ease their tensions, including resuming political, diplomatic and security dialogue while acknowledging different positions on the Diaoyu Islands.

Kishida said Japan hoped to take the trilateral meeting as an opportunity to advance exchanges and cooperation with China in joint efforts to further develop Japan-China relationship oriented to the future.

"Japan is willing to strive for the improvement of bilateral ties in the spirit of facing history squarely and advancing toward the future," on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the end of WWII and the creation of the United Nation, he said.

At a press conference together with Kishida and South Korean Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se, Wang said the resumed meeting after a hiatus of three years symbolized that the three-way cooperation had once again got back on the right track and a joint press release showed the great potential and the vast space of their cooperation.

"What the three countries should consider now is how to ensure that the three-way cooperation will not be interrupted again and how to guarantee the healthy and smooth development of the trilateral cooperation," Wang said.

As neighbors and major economies, China, South Korea and Japan should join hands to contribute to the economic development of the region and the world at large, the Chinese foreign minister said.

But in recent years, bilateral relations among the three countries have met with difficulties due to the perception of history which has troubled the three-way cooperation and gone against the common interests of the three nations and the expectations of the international community, Wang said.

He said the spirit of facing history squarely and advancing toward the future was the right attitude to handle historical issues and the only way to push forward bilateral ties and boost the three-way cooperation.

Excellent !

Since Abenomics has failed, the island dispute caused more harm than benefit to Japan which resulted economic losses for Japan, it's expected Abe does not want to make things worse with his upcoming speech marking the 70th anniversary since the end of WW2. Plus Japan does not want to be left in the cold now that China and South Korea has signed FTA.
Many things are at stake so to promote better relationship with China and South Korea, i expect Japan will treat this matter with a delicate approach.
