First phase of Dhaka metro rail project now visible

Planning Minister MA Mannan recently said the first phase -- Uttara to Agargaon -- of metro rail is likely to be operational in December.

The first phase of Bangladesh’s first metro rail project between Uttara and Agargaon is now visible as the last viaduct of this part was installed on Sunday.

The last viaduct was installed in between pier no 375 and 376 at around 11:20am. So, 11.73km viaduct of the elevated metro rail is now visible while 8.72km track installation is also done.

MAN Siddique, managing director of Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited, the implementing agency of the project, and other officials were present on the occasion.

“This is a very happy moment for us,” MAN Siddique told reporters.

The Mass Rapid Transit (MRT line-6) is scheduled to open in 2024; however, the authorities are trying for an early commission.

MAN Siddique said: “Apart from the viaduct, some other components of the project like coach, electrical and mechanical system all should function simultaneously to operate the metro rail. So, once we get the coaches in April, then we will take the decision of trial run first and then the full operation.”

Planning Minister MA Mannan recently said the first phase -- Uttara to Agargaon -- of metro rail is likely to be operational in December this year.

The Tk22,000 crore project is being implemented to build the 20.10km elevated metro rail from Uttara to Motijheel.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has directed officials to further extend the metro line from Motijheel to Kamalapur. The length of the line will then be 21.70km.

Uttara people won't use MRT, other than maybe a few students to go to BUET or DU.

Labor from Dhaka EPZ, Mirpur & Tongi industrial areas will commute to points south in Dhaka and will catch launches from Sadarghat and buses to Comilla, Noakhali and Chittagong. People with cars need roads free from too many buses and CNGs so they can move faster. So we need BRT and MRT. Cars can also use North South Dhaka Elevated Expressway when it is finished.

The idea is to bypass all the ganjam in mid-Dhaka (Tejgaon, FarmGate, Sonargaon area). That is what slows down traffic.

While they are at it, they should outlaw rickshaws too. Lazy a$$ Bangladeshi bums should learn how to walk a few miles instead of calling "Ei Ricksha !!"

Hell the Japanese walk probably ten times more in Tokyo than these Dhaka idiots.

By another five to seven years, you will have three or four more Metro Lines active which will cover most of the city and will be used to get (close to within a couple of miles of) most everywhere in Dhaka.

But short distances like this to train stations in most cities (even Tokyo) are covered by walking. We Bangladeshis are lazy and don't want to walk. Why would we - we have rickshaws.

Once Metro starts, you will see the roads get sparse quite a bit, as most people won't be on top of rickshaws or CNG's to go long distances. They will only be used for 'last mile' trip.

Rickshaws simply need to go. They are antiquated, inhuman and a slow hazard on the road driven by people untrained in traffic rules. If anything - electric EZ bikes or CNG's can stay for say, two mile trips. Rickshaws are the number one culprits that slow down traffic. We need to get rid of them.

Most large cities even in India (except maybe old Delhi and Kolkata) have Rickshaws anymore.

I wholeheartedly agree rickshaws need to go, but we also need proper footpaths... usually they’re too narrow for the amount of people and hogged by hawkers. That needs to stop

Well they are trying to evict illegal hawkers, it is a start and will continue. Look on Youtube - there are plenty of drives being made, but it has to be ongoing.

I couldn’t tell you tbh but I was shown areas deeper in uttara are usually filled with middle class whereas further out the richer population live.... kind of like wari in a way
