Popeye ji, can you explain about the blisters part, I seem to have missed that out.

^Are you forgetting they denied us the AESA radar under US pressure?

Don't, who knows what she will come up next time.@ Ganimi..
Yes..The side Blister certainly is large and thats good news..360 deg. surveillance seems to be possible now...
BTW can we modify this to operate from Carriers..E-2D is too big for the 1st 2 carriers. Can we use this by tweaking it..?
In the third phase, the CABS will develop a triangle-shaped, phased array capable of searching 360º nearly simultaneously, says Vijay Kumar Saraswat, director of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
That system will match the capabilities that India has already acquired with a 360º-scanning Elta Systems phased-array.

That side blister which was a source of much speculation here can be seen clearly. It is quite large indeed.

After the test flight is over when the Platform arrives in india,How many years would it take to Integrate the radar?????

The avionics suite will also include an L-band IFF transponder, as well as twin side-mounted L-band AESA antenna arrays that will be capable of locating and tracking targets out to 240nm while the aircraft is cruising at an altitude of 40,000 feet. In addition, these arrays signals will be less attenuated by bad weather, and will not be restricted to narrow-beam operations.
I was wrong, the two side blisters does not house a L-band array. I was led to that conclusion by reports published by Prasun K. Sengupta.
I watched the entire Aero India 2011 presentation by the Indian AEW&C Project Director AVM PP Katarki.
The contents of the side blister remains a mystery to me.
On roof mounted balance beam air borne radar elevation scan is improved by canting the radome, but the angle of incline appears to be comparable to the Erieye. So how is elevation scan and no loss of coverage due to aircraft bank (10 deg) achieved? I suspect the answer may lie within the large side blister.
While it has lead you to a correct conclusion in this case, you would be well advised not to consider Mr. Sengupta as a reliable reference. He is not a dependable guy when it comes to Indian defence.
Thanks for the info.We asked the same question (though we did not mention the blister) after that session. It was told to us that it has more to do with the internal structure of AAAU and arrangement of TRMs within. Side blister has nothing to do with it.
AVM Katarki mentioned as well as from the specification pics it says that the side blisters will contain ESM (developed by DARE). I think they are going for something special but it is ESM no doubt about that. The contents of blister are still a mystery. It does have Interferometer array, but no more is known.
Perhaps, it has more to do with future upgrades that this bird will receive.
Actually his take on DRDO AWACS was pretty good, but DBC used a source that misquoted his article, besides some wrong conlcusions she made. So far the points Mr. Sengupta made in his original article on his old blog are fitting to the infos that we now get of DRDO AWACS.
Thanks for the info.

For self-protection, the AEW & CS will have on board a fully integrated defensive aids suite that will include multi-spectral optronic sensors and an ESM suite, designed for the protection of aircraft against infra-red/laser-guided MANPADS). This will in turn be fully integrated with wingtip-mounted lightweight chaff/flare countermeasures dispensing systems. Designed from the outset as a fully integrated modular system, the fully integrated defensive aids suite will combine radar/laser/infra-red/ultra-violet missile approach warning and countermeasures dispensing functions in a single systems controller. Another component will be the ESM suite that will combine the radar warning receiver and countermeasures dispensers with interferometer antenna arrays, a missile approach warning system, laser warning system, defensive aids controller, and a display-cum-control unit
