Pakistan busts prostitution ring that sent young women to China

LAHORE, Pakistan (Reuters) - Pakistani authorities have arrested 12 suspected members of prostitution ring taking young Pakistani women to China, part of a growing human trafficking problem often based on fake marriages, officials said on Monday.

Those arrested included eight Chinese nationals and four Pakistanis, said Jameel Ahmad, a top official at Pakistan’s Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), which deals with human trafficking.

“We busted the gang after the FIA received information about increasing smuggling of Pakistani woman to China where they are thrown into prostitution,” Ahmad told Reuters.

He said several gangs were believed to be operating, mainly targeting members of Pakistan’s Christian minority.

The arrests came a week after Human Rights Watch said Pakistan should be alarmed by recent reports of trafficking of women and girls to China. It said the allegations were disturbingly similar to the pattern of trafficking of “brides” to China from at least five other Asian countries.

The Chinese embassy in Islamabad has also raised the alarm over illegal, cross-border matchmaking services that are often a front for human trafficking. Last month the embassy said China was cooperating with Pakistani law enforcement agencies to crack down on illegal matchmaking. It denied reports that the women were being trafficked for the sale of their organs as “misleading and groundless”.

Ahmad said a police raid he led on a wedding ceremony last week the eastern city of Faisalabad was a major breakthrough in the investigation.

He said a man and a woman from China and a fake priest were arrested at the ceremony where a Christian girl was to be married.

“The gang members confessed that they have sent at least 36 Pakistani girls to China where they are being used for prostitution,” he said. The majority were Christians from different districts in eastern Punjab province, he said.

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on Monday arrested eight Chinese men involved in trafficking Pakistani girls to China for the purpose of selling them into prostitution.

According to the details, the men who were arrested during a crackdown launched across Punjab were trafficking Pakistani girls under the guise of marriage and forcing them into prostitution on reaching China.

Those arrested include Wang Hao, Shoi Sheli, Wong Yhazou, Chang Shail Rai, Pan Khowajay, Wang Bao, Zaothi and Kaindisko; taking the total number of arrests in this connection to 10 so far.

It is pertinent to mention here that the suspect Chang Shail Rai was arrested in the middle of a wedding ceremony in Faisalabad where he was about to marry another girl during an intelligence-based operation of the FIA.

Zahid, a Christian father; Kashif, a matchmaking agent; Mendes, a Chinese woman; and others were also taken into custody in the raid. They made fake documents of Chinese men showing them either as Christians or Muslims.

Reports of the fake marriages had surfaced from Lahore and parts of Southern Punjab earlier last month. Some reports also claimed that organs of the women were also sold in China.

Responding to the reports, the Chinese Embassy in Islamabad issued a statement after a female lawmaker voiced her concerns over the issue in parliament denying the reports of illegal organ selling; however, it cautioned against unlawful matchmaking centres involved in these marriages to earn a profit.

“We notice that recently some unlawful matchmaking centres made illegal profits from brokering cross-national marriages. Both Chinese and Pakistani youths are victims of these illegal agents. Chinese laws and regulations strictly prohibit cross-national matchmaking centres,” the statement said.

It further said no individual is allowed to engage in any form of such activity by deception or for profit. The Chinese government also strictly prohibits any organisation or individual from buying or selling human organs in any form or engaging in such activities. For those who constitute a crime, criminal responsibility shall be investigated in accordance with the law.

China is cooperating with Pakistani law enforcement agencies to crack down on illegal matchmaking centres. We remind both Chinese and Pakistani citizens to remain vigilant and not to be cheated. We also welcome valuable clues to combat such offences. At the same time, it is hoped that reports should be based on the facts. We hope that the public does not believe in misleading information and work together to safeguard China-Pakistan friendship.

Always angry, always crying and looking for negative news all the time while ignoring the positive news and furthermore their conclusions indicate mental deficiency and sadness. Seems they have not seen any happiness in their lives.

I've heard of this before, a lot young Indian Muslims girls were taken by old rich Arab perverts. The problem is the traitors within our countries, these pigs have probably tricked so many girls before and this matter only came into media spotlight thanks to a brave investigative journalist. We need to deal with the local traitors first then the Chinese criminals need to get some good old Punjab police treatment.

PS: Not surprised this has mainly taken place in Lahore, my Awan relatives call Lahoris weak fake Punjabis lol. Would love to see these Chinese try any shit with girls in Khushab, I don't think a single of them would make it alive out of Khushab.

Social cases let the police handle it, I believe in Pakistani law and the Pakistani police. They will have a reasonable trial. But I hope that Pakistani friends will not politicize it. Some racist attacks are unnecessary.

I am glad this is picking up in media recently.
This will send a very strong message that abusing women in this country is totally unacceptable.

This is really outrageous. The worst are those pakistanis who are facilitating it.
