Thermal imaging really took off in the 1980s introduced on Abrams tank, Leopard 2 tank, F-14D fighter jet.

Earlier IRST like the ones on F-4 and F-14A could not do thermal imaging. Only starting with F-14D could IRST do thermal imaging and became IIRST.

I use IIRST to denote IRST with thermal imaging capability. IIRST appeared in the 1980s.
