WASHINGTON, May 29 (Reuters) - The U.S. Defense Department has submitted a report to Congress on rare earth minerals as it looks to reduce American reliance on China, a Pentagon spokesman told Reuters on Wednesday, amid mounting concern in Washington about Beijing's role as a supplier.

"The department continues to work closely with the president, Congress and the industrial base to mitigate U.S. reliance on China for rare earth minerals," said Lieutenant Colonel Mike Andrews, a spokesman.

"The department recently submitted a Defense Production Act III rare earth mineral report to Congress, demonstrating the department's continued focus on reducing reliance on China," Andrews said.

US companies will start to invest in less efficient and less productive mines in the US and allied nations to minimize the disruption

Which will eventually also run out. The rate at which the multinationals are plundering the resources is spectacular. China would do extremely wise to be very scarce with its precious resources. The Chinese need to impose restrictions regardless of US despicable behavior.

How much time they need?
Can the high tech chip company survive so long?
The problem is not "can" or "can not", the problem is can the high tech company survive so long.

Please live in a real world, man

Wait... I thought a rare earth embargo would have no effect at all?

There is none short term strategy Indian.
Indians think that replacing Kumar with Bob or Vegana will make them look like European settlers in America...

The money to invest in a nonproductive mining and processing of the US rare earth not worth the money to invest in.

US only have 1% of rare earth reserve, US rather import from abroad then invest into processing to deplete US rare earth reserve.

"in the US and allied nations"

The US will look at former mines in Europe, Australia, Canada. The US might even pressure these nations to buy more from the US for investment in their mining industries, an off-set. The US might even look to start fast tracking mines in Afghanistan; with all that might entail.

Most of US's chip factories r still in CN, only Google and FB r in US

and GG and FB dont nid rare earth.
