I am flying out to Pakistan in next few days and I made a point of not booking with PIA chosing instead Turkish Airlines. PIA for last few decades had become just a money making racket for political mafia in Pakistan.

When corona kicked in, the pia re-sold seats already reserved, for inflated prices and told customers, that in return, they will get reduced priced tickets at a later flight, while cancelling their flight schedule.

I know which is why PIA had a monopoly over this market. Now people flying to Pakistan have no choice but to use other carriers. Hoping this forces a material change with management, when I am flying to Pakistan I just cannot tolerate a 2-3 hour layover.

But from my last experience unless changes are made I will never fly PIA.

Perfect opportunity to completely desolve the airline

This perfect opportunity will not be taken up. What will happen is the PIA employee union in Karachi will rip up a riot. They will use their contacts in political parties. Whilst PPP has no seat in government but the weak coalition government does depend on MQM. This will ensure that the vested interests will sink any proposal to sort the mess out. Instead more money will be pumped in. A new director will take over. Much song and dance. Then the same crap will continue. PIA is diseased right to the core. Pruning won't work. The entire thing has to be chopped down so new airlines can move into this market. And government can saved from bailing this racket every year.

Yes just checked that is an option but limited to Islamabad only. I have family in Lahore and Multan.
In future if push comes to shove I will fly to Islamabad and travel by road to Lahore, domestic flight standards are even worse.

I wish BA sees this as an opportunity and starts flights to Lahore as well.

Saving tax payers money, when PIA is not flying. When PIA is flying passengers pay their fares. If you want to save tax payers money, you have to stop allocating budget to PIA and sack people with immediate effect. Until or unless Niazi or President sign executive order to stop giving money to PIA we are not saving jack s. Even pilots with fake licenses are getting paid right now.

Mate when PIA flies in UK airspace its not a Pakistani Internal matter its UK's matter as well. Same goes for EU and other blocks. If your aircraft/pilots are compromised no decent aviation authority will let you use their airspace.

Privatize it please! No need for a government run airline!

PIA is in such a state -- huge debt obligations and outstanding pension obligations -- that no airline will touch it. Literally, you cannot give the airline away if you wanted to.

There were opportunities in the past, where airlines like Emirates and Turkish offered to take over the airlines but was refused on political grounds.

Airlines like Emirates and Singapore Airlines are both considered government-owned airlines and are thriving. Mainly, they were operated as businesses, managed by professional managers, and free from political interference. PIA was once like that but it became politicized and the results are there to see.

These are exceptions to the rule and can't be taken as referance for Pakistan. Both are tiny city states that use their huge wealth to underscore these airlines in order to act as national advert banners. Most of the world airlines are now in private hands.
