Angela Merkel and her challenger in German elections, Martin Schulz, want to stop EU membership negotiations with Turkey. Because the conditions for results are missing.

Some enthusiasm hardly caused the German election movement's only television debate between Angela Merkel and Martin Schulz. More duet than duel, said the channel ARD's commentator. Christian Democratic CDU and Social Democratic SPD are in the same large coalition, and the two main candidates agreed most of the time.

At one point, however, there was a message of potential to be important: Turkey.

"If I were Chancellor, I would terminate the EU membership negotiations", said Schulz. "Yes, Turkey can not become a member of the Union", Merkel agreed.

Both of course know that Germany does not decide on its own, all EU countries must be united. Merkel stressed that she had to talk to the others first. Schulz line does not match SPD's election manifesto. But the signal was still heard.

President Erdogan is becoming increasingly despotic. After the enigmatic coup in the summer of 2016, he has been hunting for the opposition, 50,000 have been imprisoned and another over 100,000 were fired. The regime has taken control over the judiciary branch, all critics are called terrorists. A dozen German citizens are now political prisoners. The "bounteous" Erdogan offers to release them, on condition that Germany handles hundreds of asylum-seeking turks. It's a clean hostage situation.

The charges against Germany have hailed: Nazis, refuge for terrorism. Erdogan has urged Germans of Turkish origin not to vote for the "enemies" CDU or SPD. EU next? Ach Nein.

Actually, Merkel and Schulz said something everyone already knows. Membership negotiations are frozen. Erdogan's Turkey is on the wrong track according to all democratic criteria, and of course, can not be let into the EU. That a dialogue would lead to change is only idle talk at the moment. Nothing indicates that the president intends to stop pursuing his opponents, nor would he be interested in joining the club anymore.

The refugee agreement as Turkish extortion, now works badly, as it is almost impossible to move on from Greece. On the other hand, the EU's has means of pressure , since Turkey is dependent on both foreign trade and investment. In view of all arbitrary arrests, a travel alert to tourists is highly relevant.

There are arguments to maintain the illusion of membership. Turkey is not identical to Erdogan. And the land remains where it lies. But if developments were to change, the EU actually has the chance to change again.

Offcourse.

A major Muslim country will never ever ever be accepted by Europeans among itself. No matter how much sacrifice that country gave for European allies and cause.

They'll blame Erdogan now...before that it was "undemocratic Turkey"....and before that, it was "Oh economically Turkey isn't ready yet"

They'll keep coming up with excuses after excuses after excuses...

Let's be real: As long as Turks identify with their Turkish heritage and do not completely give up their culture/heritage and start to ape European culture to appease Europeans---they'll never be accepted in EU.

Yea to be honest I have heard some crazy statements especially from far right parties, I heard one crazy old guy say that if Turkey joins the EU, 80 million Muslim Turk men will march across the EU from one side to the other and rape every woman they find :omghaha::omghaha::omghaha:

Truth is very different I personally know many Turks in Turkey that have permanently returned back to Turkey from European countries and elsewhere.

The Turks are coming back to Turkey do to higher living standards not the other way around.

Most of the immigration you see lately to EU are kurds that don't want to live in Turkey, not Turks.

So these kurds go to countries such as Germany and talk badly about Turkey, they commit crimes and when caught they say they are Turks.

No wonder the Turks are getting a bad name in EU.

When in reality Turks are very civilized, friendly and sensible people, while the kurds in EU mostly tend to be agressive and make a lot of noise and bark like dogs.

The europeans need to learn to tell the difference between a Turk and a kurd.

It's like Romania, the only reason many in EU look down upon Romania are the minority gypsies stealing and begging in EU.

When you ask these gypsies where they are from they will say "Romania", and the average European will naturally think all of Romania is same, full of beggars and thieves.

Yes, one of the requirements is to follow basic human rights.

Can You name one major Muslim country which will fulfil that requirement?

Why does Turkey remain under the illusion that it should be apart of the EU?

Why does USA remain under the illusion that it should decide how the rest of the world runs their countries?

We are pretty sick of your actions, you have caused millions to die (including women and children) with the wars you've started with the fake "democracy" BS.

The land which produced the likes of Yavuz Sultan Selim ( known as Selim the Terror in Europe) is accepted in EU!!!!!! Karagalar bile guler - even crows will laugh!!!! Elhamdulillah!!!!!

President Erdogan already occupies their internal politics, how come he doesn't have a place there? :)
And, this is just the beginning for the "old men's retirement" homes !!!!

The 60s/70s/80s/90s were different times for Turkey. In economic/military/political aspects. What benefit does the potential accession to EU provide Turkey?

You already have the right to market.
You already have the right to visas.
You already had the military cooperation.

Do you really want to sacrifice the right to an independent fiscal policy? Or foreign policy?

Turkey is not accepted in Europe and never was.

You should look at maps.

Really... did Erdogan ever shared any wish settling in Europe?

Yes, one of the requirements is to follow basic human rights.
What sort of human rights are followed in your India?

You should look at maps.

I do know maps. Ceuta and Melilla are European but Africa is not part of it. Same counts for EU areas in South America and so on.

Turkey is asian / middle eastern. Its culture is in no way able to fit in. It can and will never be member of Europe.

No offence to my fellow europeans here but eu has become a place for puppets.
Turks have always been brave throughout centuries.
