Erdoğan hailed relations with Russia, China, criticised U.S. over F-35s
Jun 16 2019

Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan criticised the United States' stance on the F-35 issue and praised Ankara's relations with Russia and China, pro-government Yeni Şafak reported on Sunday.

The U.S.-Turkish relations have soured with the latter's plans to buy Russian S-400 missile systems, which according to Washington could collect data on NATO military operations. The disagreement between two NATO allies has peaked following a letter by Acting U.S. Secretary of Defense Patrick Shanahan to Turkish Defence Minister Hulusi Akar last week which said Turkey’s participation in the F-35 programme would end as of July 31 unless Turkey withdraws from its planned purchase of S-400s.

"Our decision is clear. We won't compromise on the S-400 issue," Erdoğan said on his way back from the fifth summit of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia (CICA) in the Tajik capital of Dushanbe. And, the United States is making a "mistake" by not delivering F-35 fighter jets to Turkey, he said, adding that they had a positive discussion with U.S. President Donald Trump on the matter.

Regarding Turkey's relations with China, Erdoğan said both countries were planning to reach a trading volume of $50 billion as he had previously discussed with his Chinese counterpart. He also said that Turkey's largest trade partner is Russia, with a trading volume surpassing $25 billion.

The United States also threatened Turkey with a new wave of economic sanction if Ankara would not cancel the S-400 deal with Russia.

The government is clearly forecasting the economic impact of sanctions that, if Turkey goes through with the S-400 deal, could hit its economy even harder than the U.S. sanctions over jailed American pastor Andrew Brunson that triggered the lira slide last year.

Despite possible U.S. sanctions, Erdoğan said he expected Russian S-400 missile defence systems to start arriving in Turkey in the first half of July, broadcaster NTV reported on Sunday.

“We discussed the S-400 subject with Russia. Indeed the S-400 issue is settled,” the Turkish president said. “I think they will start to come in the first half of July.”

With China? That's a surprising stance from Turkey.

Turkey wants to improve bilateral relations with China, the parliament's foreign affairs committee head said Tuesday.

During a meeting with China’s Ambassador to Turkey Deng Li, Volkan Bozkir said China has an important position in Turkey's multidimensional foreign policy.

Bozkir recalled that President Recep Tayyip Erdogan would pay an official visit to China in July.

"The People's Republic of China plays an important role in its region and in the world. For this reason, we want to improve our strategic relations," Bozkir said.

He added that Turkey also wants to improve inter-parliamentarian relations with China.

That's good news.

The export version of HQ-9 was initially selected for Turkey’s T-LORAMIDS program in 2013.

How bad could relations really be between China and Turkey?

Regardless, taking a lesson from Iran’s isolation, Turkey would be be wise not too rely too much on self reliance and instead cultivate some sort of common ground with China and Russia.

After Iran, you can be sure Uncle Sam and his influencers in Jerusalem will have Turkey in their sights.

The Problem with the Turks is that their Pan Turkic fantasies blind them hence why they foreign policy is so schizophrenic at times plus it does not help they make statements about the PRC internal affairs I am not saying China is right on Xinjiang but the PRC could use that and call hypocrisy on Turkey relations with the Kurds

First of all , Turkey cant afford to antagonize another world power. They have pissed off America , have floating relations with Russia and yet meddle in Xinjiang. God forbid if these 3 world powers covertly decide to finish Erdogan as he is the who is pissing off everybody

Yea agreed.

The main idea here is that there is NOT one self sufficient Muslim nation on earth.

One can to point to a variety of factors but the point is....we have to play nice with other powers in some shape or form.

Not recognizing this is playing with fire.

Turkish leadership starts to understand this basic fact but Turkish posters here seem to be unable to digest it.

You will be surprised that Pan Turkism feelings still linger on in Turkey.

Pan Turkism was also one of the reasons that the Ottoman Empire went into WW1. The Ottomans believed if they took the Caucasus it opens the way into Central Asia.

I highly doubt Pan Turkism will make its into the foreign policy of Turkey.

A lot of these pan Ideologies are faliures to be honest because a lot of them are all utopian and romanticised hence why they are all against reality.

They are all relics of the late 1800s to 1945. Only taken up today by edgy teenagers on the internet to look cool.

I bet central Asian stan countries feel much more closer to Russia than to Turkey, they all have Russia styole names and speak and write in Russian. Just like what happened after Turkey downed a Russian jet, all central Asian states chose to stand by Russia against Turkey.

I seen videos of Kazakhs or Kygrz saying they are not Turks.

Its not surprising to be honest hence why Turkey feels the most close with Azerbaijan to the point its brotherly but cant say the same for Central Asian countries.
