Effort To Arm Indian Stage-2 Trainer Begins

HAL has initiated a critical phase of the intermediate jet trainer (IJT) programme by calling for bids to weaponise the aircraft. After hurdles delayed the flight test programme last year, the Indian intermediate jet trainer HJT-36 Sitara is on course to obtain initial operational clearance (IOC) in June. Crucial spin recovery tests -- mandatory for the IOC checklist -- are scheduled to begin in the next two weeks. In the meantime, since the Sitara will be used for primary weapon training of pilots in gunnery, rocketry, bombing and weapon aiming, HAL has now invited bids to give the platform a 12.7-mm gun pod (with 200 round capacity) suitable for its in-board wing stations.

The programme team intends to deliver a fully operational platform to the IAF in 2013. The IAF has asked for over 70 aircraft, but is almost certain to finally order nearly three times that number. The HJT-36 will also feature prominently on HAL's export catalogue. Am working on a retrospective of the Sitara programme, with lots of pictures. That should be done in the next week or so.

I'm sure this has been asked and answered before, but please humour me- what is the point in the Sitara HJT-36?? I mean what is the advantage/point in a 3 stage traing program (basic trainer RFIs out flight test completed, Hawks inducted (107 order) what is comparable to other modern AFs in the world (USAF/RAF/Luftaffe etc) is there a genuine need for them??? Also if it fills a COMPLETLY necceacary and unique role and is not comparable to the HAWK then why is there talk of it REPLACING the HAWK for the Surya Kiran and vice versa?? If the Sitara is unique then it can't be replced by the Hawk no???

Well the reason is simple. The pilots would have logged in all kinds of problems that they will be facing in these trainers which they are bound to face during operational flying. Every country in the world nowadays follows 3 tier or 4 tier training. I strongly reccommend the LCA trainer to be a part of the LIFT programme. This will give the pilots a better survivability and training in actual combat.

My cousin, a fighter pilot in IAF went through following stages"

basic flying on HPT-32 for 6 months.

advance trainign on HJT-16 kiran for 6 months.

applied stage on iskras (now phased out) for 6 months

Mig operational training for one year.


IAF fighter training fleet will in future consist of:

newly inducted trainers replacing HPT-32
HJT-36 sitara
Hawks
operational training at fighter trainer like LCA or MIG-21 UB.
