AMSTERDAM: The Dutch government intends to draft a law that would legalize assisted suicide for people who feel they have "completed life," but are not necessarily terminally ill, it said on Wednesday.

The Netherlands was the first country to legalize euthanasia, in 2002, but only for patients who were considered to be suffering unbearable pain with no hope of a cure.

In a letter to parliament, the health and justice ministers said details remain to be worked out but that people who "have a well-considered opinion that their life is complete, must, under strict and careful criteria, be allowed to finish that life in a manner dignified for them."

The proposal is likely to provoke critics who say Dutch euthanasia practice has already expanded beyond the borders originally envisioned for it, with "unbearable suffering" not only applying to people with terminal diseases, but also to some with mental illnesses and dementia.

The euthanasia policy has widespread backing in Dutch society, and cases have risen by double digits every year for more than a decade as more patients request it and more doctors are willing to carry it out. Euthanasia accounted for 5,516 deaths in the Netherlands in 2015, or 3.9 percent of all deaths nationwide.

Health Minister Edith Schippers wrote in the letter that "because the wish for a self-chosen end of life primarily occurs in the elderly, the new system will be limited to" them.

She did not define a threshold age.

The new law will require "careful guidance and vetting ahead of time with a 'death assistance provider' with a medical background, who has also been given additional training."

Other aspects of the law as she envisions it will include safety mechanisms including third-party checks, reviews and supervision.

The proposal comes as a surprise, as a commission enlisted to study the idea of allowing a "completed life" extension to current policy concluded there was no need for it.

The ministers disagreed. "The Cabinet is of the opinion that a request for help (in dying) from people who suffer unbearably and have no hope without an underlying medical reason can be a legitimate request".

They hope to draft a law, in consultation with doctors, ethicists and other experts, by the end of 2017.

I was hoping they would make Religions 18+ stuff....It is the only country that could take that much needed First Step. Bible Thumpers are breeding like their ISIS cousins.

Who would want commit to suicide in a country where Marijuana is legal, the greatest anti-depressant....:drag:
Even Crack-Cocaine won't help this kinda people..:smokin:

By 2150 human population will be crushing under the weight of the elderly. Only way to tackle this problem is to allow them to die in a dignified manner. Because they usually dont want to hang around uselessly either. This proposal is commendable and it will become the norm in the whole world within 100 years. For economic reasons as well as for reasons of human dignity.

Depression that come as package with atheism far exceed the limits of remedy and sanity. Marijuana or hash is a death traps....it makes the person even more depressed while for a Muslim 2 rak'at salat with concentration and few tears of repentance cure the insanity and depression...A belief that A superbeing is there to take of me ...is immense value. I have experienced myself despite being a born Muslim I sometimes think I rediscovered my faith and the spiritual connection in USA living alone away from my family in a spiritually hostile environment.

I totally agree..... Depression comes into those people's lives that are faithless. Faith is the greatest anti-depressant, it gives you something forward to look to. Being a Muslim, I know that I will be reunited with loved ones that I lost or will lose in the future and I also have faith in my lord that he is the Most-Gracious, the Most-Merciful.

For as long as I can remember, my family and I have been struggling with many things. Even today, I'm stressed the hell out about something but Im so used it by now that I say "Shukar-Alhumdulillah" even in the most testing times.

This Ayah keeps me going no matter what-
"But those who believe and work righteousness,- no burden do We place on any soul, but that which it can bear,- they will be Companions of the Garden, therein to dwell (for ever)."- 7:42

I never had any depression. For me faith is for those who can't or don't want to think too much about life and seek easy answers... it's also damaging in the long run because it doesn't offer any challenges.

Honestly, Then what do you think will happen after your death...is there any life or everything will end with your 75, 85 or 95 yrs of life time?

Im not saying that if don't have faith then you're definitely depressed. As for Faith itself, people say we won't believe unless someone proves to us that there is a Divine being out there, but I say I won't stop believing until someone proves that there is no God.....

I have met a lot of people in Europe and USA especially women who went through stresses in their lives and they were nearly broken when Allah through His mysterious ways, showed them some clues that lead them to the right path, the path of the hope and tranquility and now they won't trade it for anything.

Yeah bro, If Allah sees faith in anyone's heart, then he guides them towards himself in very mysterious ways and as for others they are blind....."Have they not traveled in the land, and have they hearts wherewith to feel and ears wherewith to hear? For indeed it is not the eyes that grow blind, but it is the hearts, which are within the bosoms, that grow blind." Quran 22.46

They think the pain on the earth is too much bear but in reality after death is the most deadly live horror that no man ever imagined
