DRDO wins Thomson Reuters innovation award

New Delhi: India's premier military weapons developer, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), was Thursday awarded the Thomson Reuters India Innovation Award for 2011 in recognition of its work in the field of science and technology.

The award was presented to DRDO by Minister of State for Science and Technology Ashwani Kumar at an event organised here by Thomson Reuters and the Confederation of Indian Industry, a release said.

DRDO's Chief Controller for Research and Development Dr K.D. Nayak received the award on behalf of the organisation. The defence research agency won the award in the "Hi-tech Academic and Government Institution" category.

The winner was adjudged on the basis of size of patent portfolio, success rate, extent of globalisation and influence of innovation as the analytical parameters.

DRDO is the largest government science and technology organisation engaged in developing defence technologies covering various disciplines to provide India's armed forces world-class weapons and equipment to fight wars and to defend the country effectively from external aggression.

DRDO has generated a wide range of cutting edge defence technologies covering disciplines like aeronautics, armaments, electronics, combat vehicles, engineering systems, instrumentation, missiles, advanced computing and simulation, special materials, naval systems, life sciences, training and information systems.

The organisation has been consistently making efforts at innovation and creating an Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) culture as an integral part of research and development, which resulted in an IPR portfolio of about 1400 patents, copyrights, designs and trademarks.

Good achievement. Way to go. All the best for future projects.

I think DRDO should go to IITs, IISc and other major universities and offer salary packages through campus recruitment like corporates.

Congratulations DRDO,

I work in private industry and we have key performance initiatives (KPA) based appraisals or salary increments.
I think similar should be applied on stricter level in government organisations like DRDO.
That will improve performance even more and punish the lazy persons benefitting hard working persons.

DRDO chief Dr V K Saraswat dedicated the success of the launch to the young DRDO. “I dedicate this success to all the youngsters who have contributed with a large heart. I am not playing to the gallery as I have already communicated this internally. The mentoring we started a couple of years back is paying rich dividends. Give it to them (youngsters) as they deserve all the laurels,” Saraswat told The New Indian Express.
