Why the upper class practiced it may be religion but why the other took it is mostly poverty.

In my own great grand father times, the untouchables in our village farms and town household won't be able to eat unless they got wages from our farms.

Over the next couple of generations the subservience is gone because they can earn a living.

Our sense of right and wrong is often based on what the people who surround us say. Many African American slaves who worked the plantation believed that it is natural and proper for them to be slaves. Strange, sad and yet true. People humiliate themselves because thats all they've known, servitude. They're helpless and these fake religious charlatans take advantage of them.
