There was no such option valid for the princely states.

The British encouraged the princely states to join one of the dominions but it was not binding. Hyderabad and Kashmir chose to join neither India nor Pakistan. The Maharaja of Kashmir later acceded his state to India but Hyderabad remained independent till India annexed it in 1948.

IMHO, theoretically a princely state could become independent state. However, Mountbatten was never in favour of this.

We can analyze the history as much as we like, but I do not see any realistic way any of these issues being revisited to the exclusive stance of any single party. The way forward must be a compromise, and that is all I will say here.
