Development of Improved Indian Arjun Complete: DRDO

# Phase I, 45 tanks will roll out with 56 upgrades, including the missile firing capability and the commander's panoramic sight with night vision.
# Phase II, the remaining 79 tanks, with all the 93 improvements, will come off the assembly line. “By 2013-14, the first batch of around 30 tanks will go out,” Dr. Sivakumar said.
I don't think this will happen now. According to latest reports the production will begin by 2014, only after both the phases will be field tested.

I dont think at the time they were placing orders,Arjun Mk-2 was anywhere in the picture,I think that can be be a terrible setback if they had waited this long for Mk-2 to get developed, given DRDO's reputation of time management.

Its more a case of "import" hungry culture of Army, than delays.

Indian army management are covering faces after Arjun beat T-90 in Thar trials, so there is nothing to speak of their credibility.

I guess further orders were placed after Arjun's excellent performance against T-90's just to cover up their face. And after the Israeli assessment more orders can be in the pipeline :agree:

One should play same game on Army which it plays with Indian R&D institutions. Ask Army to consult Israeli firm on how to run an Army. Then we will see how they feel their balls being picked up by foreign agencies.

Actually, Indian army and IAF doesn't have any qualified people who can assess their own requirements or even products they want to buy. So, they go for foreign help.

They don't even know how to run an army themselves. A bunch of jokers.

Its not like that, maybe they wanted to know where ARJUN stands in comparison to other tanks. A 3rd party assessment always helps improving your product.

Nice to know that. Did you retire from the Army? Or any of the services? If you did, then chances are that you know what you are talking about.
And I would have to be seriously listening to you.

Development of Improved Indian Arjun Complete: DRDO
NEW DELHI - India's state-owned Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) claims that it has completed upgrades on the Arjun tank, replacing existing German engines and transmission systems with homemade systems.

The Mark-II Arjun will incorporate up to 90 percent of indigenous content, compared with 58 percent in the current model, a DRDO scientist said, and should be ready for induction by 2014.

The Mark-II also will feature superior missile-firing capabilities, the scientist added.

Conceived in 1973, the Arjun tank was behind schedule by more than 15 years, resulting in the Indian Army choosing the Russian T-90 tank as its main battle tank. The Arjun had to go through a series of trials and retrials before the Army announced the tank fit for duty. Last year, the Arjun Mark-I had to be put on comparative trials against the Russian T-90, after which the Indian Army finally concluded that the Arjun tank performed to expectations.

Earlier, the Arjun faced problems concerning its fire control system and suspension, and its weight-restricted mobility.

Last year, the Indian Army ordered an additional 124 tanks, bringing the total to 248.

There is a difference between patriotism and blind faith.

There is inherent corruption in IAF and Indian army running from top to down. That's a fact. Period.

And, biggest problem is IAF don't want to be questioned on corruption in public or even hold accountable. They are in "we are highly immortal and pure. Don't touch us. Don't question us!"

This attitude is what has led to the situation IAF is in today. A totally handicapped organisation lacking any foresight of where it wants to go or vision of its future.

I am referring to top management of IAF and Indian army. Nothing against individuals here.

Situation is opposite if you go level down. Ground soliders are much more supportive of R&D efforts like LCA, AMCA and Arjun, and they wonder why IAF is so much against domestic R&D programs.

Also I am not surprised that you are feeling intrigued with my comments. Army/IAF types are known to be preserving their Colonial arrogance and they look down on common people as if they are mortals/expendables.

Isn't this true, "Sir"? (I presume, you are one of highly immortal(don't touch us, we can't be corrupt!) type).

African countries require such third party assessments. If Army doesn't know how to assess a battle tank, then how they trust their own decision to justify over-expensive craps like T-90 over Arjun?

Last time I checked T-90 had faulty thermal sights which had to be replaced by spending another $100 million(in addition to overpriced imported tank). So, how Army failed to assess even their imported baby properly?

I am not sure how capable Indian army is, to take decisions for itself and need foreign consultants from time to time in every strategic decisions they take. So, why brag to be best army in world? They are bunch of jokers, at best.

Going for T-90s is infact a very good decision taken by the army, given its weight T-90 can be operated in mountainousness terrains while ARJUN lacks in this field because of its weight. Arjun is developed keeping Pakistan in mind and desert terrain as the area of action, thats where its deadly.:agree:

Good joke. T-90 can't mount himalayas and you don't fight with tanks in mountains.

Rejecting Arjun MBT was a big blunder and this has been established even in parliament.
